We say that we want to see change in the world but we don’t ever think about how we’re responsible for breaking the cycles and raising up the future adults. There’s been so many cases of families having their children taken away, not because they’re terrible parents, but because they can’t afford to provide. There are also children who are being neglected and the system is failing them tragically. How many children are we going to lose before we start to understand that child welfare matters? In this case, there’s a child named Casey whose family was under investigation with cps. During the investigation cps didn’t find any signs of abuse or intentional neglect. Casey’s mom is a new widow and single mom of 3 kids. She’s having a hard time maintaining household bills, children needs, and tuition all on her own. Instead of removing the child from the home, I have a list of resources that can help the family in this situation. Firstly, there’s a local organization, the Catholic Charities Archdiocese of New Orleans. The CCANO can be found at https://www.ccano.org . This organization provides help with

Casey’s mom could either visit the website or call the local number to figure out which one of her needs could be serviced by the agency and how to get started. With family therapy and bill assistance this could help their family work through their grief while also giving mom a little help while she’s figuring things out. Statewide help can come from The Department of Children and Family Services. The website is https://www.dcfs.louisiana.gov . DCFS can help this family in numerous ways. Casey’s mom can apply for food stamps. I’m sure it is difficult to provide food for a household of 4 with a single income in this economy. DCFS not only offers food stamps but in some cases individuals can receive temporary cash assistance. While in the process of getting approved for food stamps, case workers will also ask if families would like to receive Medicaid health insurance. With the help of food stamps, temporary cash, and free health insurance Casey’s mom would have the weight of a few household needs lifted off of her shoulders. She would be able to focus on helping her family get through this period of grief. With all of these links the family should be able to get through this tough time without having to go through another traumatic event like separation.
