Writing Prompt: Name and discuss a work of architecture covered in the course that was new to you, stood out, and/or has become a new favorite. Explain why you selected this work and what you like to discover if/when visiting it in-person.
The work of architecture covered in the course that stood out the most to me is the Colosseum. I am fascinated by the mighty power and extensive span of control that the old Roman Empire possessed. Designed to seat a staggering 50,000 people, the arena represents both
architectural and cultural elements of the Roman Empire. Despite the sheer size of the structure, the stadium seating was designed to allow for a good view and acoustics from every seat. By combining Roman concrete and rounded arches, the architects could also create a series of tunnels and passages under the spectator seating
1
. Such tunnels were used for the transportation of people, animals, and supplies that were a part of the various interesting forms of entertainment
held in the Colosseum. Some nights would host theatrical plays and productions, others would have public speakers, and on the bloodiest of nights, gladiator fights would take place. Though they are full of gore, gladiator fights were the personal favorites of the Romans
2
. Seeing a real gladiator fight in person is not exactly my favorite form of entertainment however, I am intrigued
by the violent cultural practice. If I were to visit the Colosseum, I would be the most excited to explore the inner workings and tunnels where gladiators prepared for battle. I would also like to sit in the spectator section and visualize what it must have been like to see a show centuries ago.
