5. Read Mendelssohn bios. Listen to Concerto for Violin. List 3 reasons why there were so few woman composers.
There are numerous reasons for the disproportionate amount of male composers opposed to female composers. Some of these reasons are that until the last century, Women
usually could not own property, vote in the few democratic countries that had elections, engage in enterprises outside the home, or travel overnight without an escort. They were generally treated as the property of their husbands and because of that they were often discouraged by male influence from becoming professional musicians or composers. Another reason is that getting a work published was no easy matter and until a composer had achieved a certain degree of name recognition, it was extremely difficult to be published. Also, another reason for the lack of female composers was the prejudice they faced in pursuing instruction in harmony, counterpoint, orchestration, and similar subjects, and sometimes would write work under a male’s name to avoid this prejudice. https://youtu.be/vzbC39utkTw?si=LI1zVqzUBDtGXgYtLinks to an external site.
