his week's reading discussed the importance of soft skills and how we can prepare students as they transition to other areas outside of the public school realm. We must help students understand the importance of independence as they transition to the following stages in their journey. Soft skills empower individuals to communicate effectively, build relationships, and make sound decisions. It is essential that, depending on the student's age, soft skills can be taught at many stages of a child’s life. Students can benefit from using soft skills to help with empathy and self-awareness to help develop emotional well-being and intelligence.
Soft skills are not just acquired but taught at different levels for a student. Many students find that soft skills must be used to secure job placement, college stipulations, etc. Teachers can help work with the student and their families to help create the best plan for the student. As mentioned above, teachers can start teaching students this at many stages in their educational journey.
“A team can be encouraged to promote teamwork and workplace expectations on attire and encourage professional behavior” (Foster et al., 2019). Teachers can start promoting these skills to help support the
student. One way is to have the student role play. This can help the student in a dramatized setting to help them understand how to be professional. Another thing that might benefit the students is having visual cues to help support them when they are at work.
“Students deserve the opportunity to be taught work-related social skills to be successful and live fulfilling, happy lives” (Futurity et al., 2019). It is essential for these students to feel comfortable and supported and to go on and live fulfilling lives. “Whatever you do, work at it with all of your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters" (English Standard Version Bible, 2001, Colossians 3:23). We, as educators, are put into these students' lives to help support and motivate them as they start a new journey. It will be scary for them, and giving them patience, love, and understanding can provide them with hope and excitement for what will lie ahead for them as they seek employment. It is our responsibility to make sure that the students are prepared using soft skills and understanding with the outward goal of making them feel comfortable and supported.
