2 The Media Made Me Do It When examining how I viewed the world when I was younger related to various TV series, I believe TV shows affected my beliefs and assumptions about the world of adulthood and family. What we see in the media frequently shapes our vision of reality. Over the years, I believe "Speedracer," "Little House in the Prairie," and ER shaped and affected my life and significantly influenced my worldview. "God has given individuals specific gifts of creativity and craftsmanship." (NIV Study Bible, 2011; Exodus 31:3-5) This verse states that God has given people gifts that allow them to create unique works, including artistic design. Every story that is told in these stories is some creative design. In our book Hollywood Worldview, Godawa states, "Storytelling is meaningless gibberish unless reality itself is narratable, and reality is unnarratable in a universe without a transcendent narrator." (Godawa, 2002/2009, p. 70) The legendary 1960s cartoon series Speed Racer made a lasting impression on me, introducing me to bravery, adventure, and the loyalty of friends and family, as well as rescue and heroism. The show introduced me to fast races, risk-taking stunts, and exhilarating experiences, which I believe might have begun instilling the adrenaline-junky portion of my character. The bond between Speed, Spritle, and Chim-Chim teaches about loyalty, teamwork, and family ties, promoting a worldview of "the good life." The Bible states: "Anyone who does not provide for their relatives, and especially for their own household, has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever" (NIV Study Bible, 2011; 1 Timothy 5:8). There was a high expectation created in me, that loyalty of family was how we should live. The Bible says that is true, yet it is not something I have experienced in my life. Speed's main rival is Racer X, his long- lost brother, who embodies heroism and sacrifices personal desires for the greater good,
3 adding layers of mystery and intrigue. As stated in our reading, "And there are many other elements of the Christin worldview, including loving one's neighbor, truth, justice, mercy and son, all of which point toward or illustrate our inner need for redemption" (Godawa, 2002/2009, p. 89) “Little House on the Prairie" profoundly impacted my ideas of life and what constitutes "the good life." The Ingalls family lived in a modest log cabin, emphasizing the value of simplicity. The Ingalls family, united by strong family ties, resilience, determination, and a strong work ethic, faced challenges together to build their homestead and cultivate crops. They believed in God, prayed, and went to church routinely. Their love for God may represent the source of their strength. “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (NIV Study Bible, 2011; Galatians 2:20). When we are resilient, we still have trouble but can move forward. The show's setting emphasized the beauty of nature—the changing seasons, sunsets, and open spaces causing me to appreciate creation. Psalm says, "Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad; let the sea resound, and all that is in it. Let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them; let all the trees of the forest sing for joy”. (NIV Study Bible, 2011; Psalm 96:11-12) This led me to experience God's beauty in the world through the TV. "ER" is a popular TV show that takes us inside the bustling emergency room of Cook County General Hospital in Chicago (a fictionalized version of the real Cook County Hospital), focusing on the lives of physicians, nurses, and staff. It highlighted the dedication and compassion of medical professionals, teaching the importance of teamwork, resilience, and ethical dilemmas. It taught me that the good life involves serving others, even in the most challenging circumstances. Many characters juggled demanding careers with personal
