Art has been a medium of creativity and expression since the beginnings of human existence, and has served as a powerful tool in conveying messages and ideas of different cultures and times. In the modern world, art is flourishing and has taken a central role in connecting people from diverse backgrounds and providing an opportunity for individuals to learn from and appreciate different cultures. By looking at the changing landscape of art across countries and cultures, it is clear that art has become a powerful resource for both celebrating and understanding cultural diversity in the world. In this essay, I will be exploring how art plays a fundamental role in strengthening the appreciation and understanding of cultural diversity in the modern world. Art has been used over time to express lifestyles, cultures and beliefs. Looking back at ancient civilizations such as Greece and Rome, art was used to depict society (Bittner, J., 2018). In today’s world, art has evolved to become a tool of cultural diversity. It has been used to communicate visual stories that are symbolic of life experiences and beliefs of different cultures (Rivera-Kolb, 2014). Art has been used to demonstrate the long-standing acceptance of diversity that is better understood as a result of its presence. Through art, cultures and communities are connected, sharing common values and heritage (Gondek, K., 2018). Thus, art is viewed as a way of connecting not only individuals but also societies across cultures allowing for a better understanding between different people, histories and beliefs (Soden-Groves, 2016). Different art forms have evolved from one period to the next, often borrowing from previous iterations to create new interpretations (Pollock 73). In modern times, art acts as an important outlet for describing the nuances of cultural differences, allowing for a greater understanding of different cultural perspectives (Molloy 87). Through various mediums, such as visual and performance art, artists are able to capture a range of diversity and convey their creative ideas in unique and meaningful ways. By pushing the boundaries of artistic expression, contemporary artwork is able to capture the diversity of cultures in a way unparalleled by past artworks (Perreault 9). Ultimately, art has come to represent a diverse range of cultural beliefs and values, and has become a vital tool in communicating nuanced and meaningful messages in a way that can only be appreciated through art.

Throughout history, the purpose, style, and medium of art has changed drastically in order to reflect changing times and cultures. In ancient Egypt, the people used art to represent their beliefs, values, and history. Similarly, in the modern world, art has been used to embrace and celebrate cultural diversity. For instance, Mexican muralism, which is a type of public mural painting that uses multi-cultural themes, has been used since the 1920s as an expression of Mexican culture, identity and values (Calzadilla and Lomnitz, 2012). Art is an evolving form of expression and by using a variety of works from different cultures, art can create a sense of connection with individuals from different backgrounds. By "viewing art from around the world, people can gain a better understanding and appreciation for other cultures" (Lam, 2018). Therefore, art has been and will continue to be a powerful tool to celebrate and promote cultural diversity. Calzadilla, M. and Lomnitz, L. (2012). Mexican muralism. Dia Art Foundation. In modern times, however, art has become more about money than the actual art itself. Many argue that the market has placed too much pressure on the artist, making them feel compelled to produce art "based on what the market will buy" rather than the artist's own vision (Fullerton, in Murner, 2012). The fact that more people are buying art as a form of collecting rather than buying it because they actually appreciate the piece is another sign of how “market pressures have changed attitudes in the field of art as well” (Dailey, in p.195-196, 2007). Despite these market pressures, modern art continues to thrive and allow artists to express themselves in various forms. Art is a powerful tool that allows people in the modern world to connect to each other's cultural diversity. It gives individuals a chance to communicate and appreciate different cultures without boundaries. From paintings to sculpture, to music and dance, art creates bridges and understanding between cultures, celebrating diversity and uniting us all. While we may come from different backgrounds and cultures, art brings us all together, inspiring us to think and
