How do you support and celebrate cultural diversity within instruction?
At the beginning of each school year, I do an” All About Me” lesson plan. I focus on the students to talk about their culture and to openly discuss where they are from. Since we are a private center, we also do summers with the kids and at the end of each summer, we host a “Bring home to school” event which allows the parents to cook or bake a meal that is based on their culture and to bring it to school for everyone to try. We of course state that there cannot be any form of nuts and will need to be made based off kids with allergies in our school. 2.
How do you leverage your home language and cultural assets?
In our program, it is up to our Owner and director to do all the intake paperwork for all new students. This means they will be the ones to discuss what language is primarily used at home, if they can speak and understand any English and what things would help their children at school. If we feel that there is a language barrier, we must communicate with our director to get further assistance with talking to the parents. 3.
How do you show responsiveness to the different strengths, needs, and identities of all ELLs, including special needs?
I like to give attention to each of my students, this has always been my main goal with all my students. This will give me the opportunity to learn their strengths, what they need more help with. Unfortunately, since this is a private center, all we can do is watch
and evaluate children that may need extra help and communicate with the families and then give them numbers for the extra help they need that we cannot provide them with.
