Historical Events
Two historical events that impacted career development are the teachings of
theologian John Calvin and globalization. John Calvin expanded the early Christian definition of work from a way to help others and find spiritual purification to work’s value being the profits it provided. This development gave privileged white males a moral justification to work for profit in an endless pursuit of wealth and ownership (Niles& Harris-Bowlsbey, p.10, 2022). I chose this event because it was pivotal in creating the capitalist society we have now in 2023.
Globalization has brought a multitude of advantages and disadvantages. Global unemployment rates have decreased, companies that outsource have
lower costs, and consumers benefit from lower cost items. The downsides to globalization are exploitation of workers, increase in inequality, lowered safety for workers, lower environmental regulations, companies gain more political influence, increases in human trafficking, increase to male and female disparities, more higher and lower paid jobs, and less middle skill jobs
(Niles& Harris-Bowlsbey, p.6-7, 2022). Globalization has completely changed career development from secure career paths to career uncertainty and constant change. These historical events give the background to where career development is today.
Impact on marginalized groups
The dogma created by Christians and escalated by John Calvin and his followers widened the gap between the privileged and marginalized groups. These beliefs were that God ordered social hierarchies, one’s status should be accepted, and idealized Eurocentric colonial superiority (Rodríguez, n.d.). This meant minorities were seen as less than and that a higher power deemed them so therefore they needed to accept their place in society. This set minorities back in career development in comparison to those in the Eurocentric superiority because it was an inherently unjust system everyone was made to conform to. Decades and decades later those marginalized groups are still far from being able to catch up as the systems of oppression and privilege continue covertly and overtly.
Marginalized groups have been victims of globalization in many ways. Globalization has changed the living conditions and the cultures of minority groups rarely with their consultation. Minorities are expected to conform to the Western modern society in order to enjoy benefits or disappear (Croisy, 2019). The homogenization of cultures means that cultural diversity could eventually cease to exist over the course of time.
Through my research I have had a difficult time finding academic articles to specifically support what I believe to be true. I believe both of these events
to have deeper negative impacts on marginalized groups and their careers. I believe the negative impacts of globalization are felt the hardest by minorities and the benefits are enjoyed mostly by the privileged.
