W3 Discussion Requirements:
Assume that as a music reporter for a newspaper, you have the
opportunity to interview a Baroque composer for an article you are writing.
Choose a composer from the Baroque period.
Name the composer in your post.
Listen to two compositions written by that composer. Name the
compositions in your post. (Note: You may choose a composer not
discussed in this week's reading.)
List five questions you would ask and what you think the composer's
answers would be. (Three questions should be related to music.) Include a
link to an example of that composer's music in your response. Include a
thoughtful subject line that reflects your main points. Initial posts should
be well developed and demonstrate understanding of the course materials
using information from the reading or other scholarly sources to support
your ideas.
Respond to two classmates by asking "the composer" additional questions
(plural). As in the initial post, response posts should be well developed and
demonstrate understanding of the course materials using information from
the reading or other scholarly sources to support your ideas. It is also
encouraged that everyone follow up on the questions that are posed to
you. Your answer and responses to others will be graded as part of your
Discussion participation for this week. Check for spelling and grammar
errors in your posts.
Hello all,
I chose Johann Sebastian Bach, a German composer from the Baroque Era. According to The
Editors of Encyclopedia Brittanica, he is considered one of the greatest composers of all time,
specifically due to two of his most celebrated collections: Brandenburg Concertos and The Well-
Tempered Clavier (Marshall, 2023). Bach has numerous amounts of compositions but there is a
couple that stood out the most:
Allegro
and
BWV 147 Jesu a
nd
Joy of Man’s Desiring.
Neither of
these are his most popular but
Allegro
had me drawn from the initial listen. The composition reminds
me of a ball room type of gathering with everyone dressed in the best attire and a very upscale
musical team is performing along to the elegant melody. The next would-be
BWV 147 Jesu, Joy of
Man’s Desiring.
BWV stands for Bach-Werke-Verzeichnis
which is the numbering system used to
identify Bach’s compositions (Jacobs, 2012, p. 80). I thought that was neat, hence why I used it as the
subject line. He accomplished many of things for the first time and using this phrase to label his
music, due to having so much, only showed how great of a composer he was.
Questions:
-Do you think your music will last for centuries to come?
Bach: As long as the glory of God continues, my work will continue.
-What is the significance of your mark S.D.G?
Bach: Soli deo gloria, it allows me to mark my work and further my beliefs, as a Pious Lutheran I
believe in God and individual Piety.
-Did the 200 mile walk from Arnstadt to Lübeck seem to be worth it?
Bach: Time is effort, effort is music.
-Would you consider yourself as a leader or follower?
Bach: I am a follower of god and a leader amongst composing.
-Currently, what is your most important musical piece?
Bach: No style is greater than the next.
