Do you agree or disagree with Kevin Manning’s discussion about distance learning? Is distance learning as effective as traditional on-campus schooling? Why did you choose distance learning to pursue your current degree? From your readings in this module, what relevant issues have you faced, and what benefits have you enjoyed in pursuing your education in an online format? Feel free to include a Bible verse or link to another video to support your statement. 300 words. You must also submit at least 2 replies of at least 150 words each. When discussing the presentation from “The Future of Higher Education”, by Kevin Manning, one cannot help to think of how much higher education has advanced and strengthened throughout the years. We do see a need for the “cell phone” and the ability to archive the degree of choice as a distance learner. As Manning stated, there are over 7 billion cell phones in the world, and technology is at the forefront of education. The only question then is what can it offer students? A student participating in a traditional college classroom would most likely take a 16- week course. With distance learning, a student can take the courses apart and take an 8-week course to support their degree. Many would say that you would miss out on the engagement offered in a traditional classroom, however, Manning reported that students are typically being lectured by a professor regarding your course. The cell phone allows a distant learner to rewatch their lecture or even pause to take notes, which to many can be beneficial. Also, many universities are not utilizing the desktop, and are moving toward cell phones which provide students with easier access to their courses. Further, Manning reported, just like the newspaper, the “structure of higher education is going to change for the better” (The Future of Higher Education, 2016). As we look toward the future, we see that distance learning is helping potential students around the world have greater access to the education that they may never have access to historically. With Wi-Fi at their fingertips and solar energy to charge their devices, the sky is the limit when it comes to their education. For myself, my education journey has been incredible. As an undergraduate and graduate student, I attended Nova Southeastern University. I was a college athlete and was able to experience life on a college campus and gain many treasured memories. Today, I can go back to school, and pursue another graduate degree, in a field that I am very passionate about while maintaining my career and my family as a distance learner. I feel that the life experiences that I have had in education, have led me to this degree, for which I am thankful. As a mother of two and a full-time school counselor, being able to pursue this degree as a distance learner is a blessing. I feel that I would never be able to attend the school of my choice and pursue this degree without being able to complete it virtually. I just recently left a brick-and-mortar elementary school where I have spent the last 6 years, to continue to work as a school counselor virtually. Just like my education, my career has led me to the virtual world. I feel many would say that the personal relationships you form when attending something in person are vital for
growth and success, I feel that I can accomplish this with an open heart and mind. With that perspective, whether a student is learning in a traditional environment or in the comfort of their own home, the depth of knowledge gained, and level of effectiveness is dictated solely by the motivation and engagement of the student. Therefore, “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have the opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers” (Galatians 6:9-10).
