Goal: To determine similarities and differences in programmatic compositions of the Romantic period. Instructions : Following your listening guides, “mp3” files and the information in your textbook, listen to the compositions below and answer the following questions. 1. Read pages 212-222 in your textbook. Compare the following two listening guide examples: Listening Guide 26, pages 215-216: Symphonie Fantastique, Fourth movement. Listening Guide 27, pages 221-222: Peer Gynt, Suite. No. 1, Op. 46. Who composed the first selection? Hector Berlioz Who composed the second selection? Edvard Greig 2. In a programmatic composition, the composer always provides the program for his work. This is what he/she wants to narrate, portray or convey through the composition. What is the program for the Symphonie Fantastique? (213-215). The program note for the Symphonie Fantastique recounts the tragic tale of a prodigious artist who committed suicide due to unrequited love for another individual. The musician experiences unsettling flashbacks of his beloved because of his unsuccessful suicide endeavor. What does the composition Peer Gynt describe? (220). The arrangement In Peer Gynt, a Norwegian named Peer is described as a lazy daydreamer who makes snap decisions that cause him to have a lot of problems. How are these two selections similar? State at least three similarities . 1. they both were written in the romantic period 2. they have 4 or more movements

The musical medium for Symphonie Fantastique are English horns, harp, ophicleide, clarinet, a few strings, flute/piccolo, bassoons, and trumpets/cornet. In Peer Gynt Suite it includes a few wind, string, percussion, drum, and brass instruments The Symphonie Fantastique is a program symphony, and Peer Gynt is incidental music. Compare the musical genres of these two works and explain them. Program symphony is a multi-movement orchestral work containing 3 - 5 movements . Incidental music is usually a series of pieces which is played between acts of a play . Explain the use of idée fixé in the Symphonie Fantastique . What does it represent in the composition by Berlioz? (213). The Symphonie Fantastique uses the term "idée fixé" to allude to the recurring theme of his love and obsession with Harriet. 3. Read pages 208-211 in your textbook about program music for the piano in the Romantic period. Listening Guide 25, page 211: September, At the River from “The Year” (Das Jahr). 1. What is the piano cycle “The Year” about? Describe this composition as a whole. It is said that the piano cycle "The Year" is about the passing of time, either in terms of the seasons or an individual's life. 2. Describe “September, At the River” (209-210). A steady stream of sounds that depict the river's movement plays the melancholy tune "September, At the River." There are both high-pitched and low-pitched melodies in the composition. As the composition comes to a finish, the tone changes to one that is happier and brighter, as though the grief has subsided.
