Benchmark - Treatment Interventions
There are a variety of challenges that appear during counseling in today's culture that play
a role in how someone that aids the client should approach the condition including deciding the
best approach to use and all the various factors that must be taken into consideration for
treatment to work. It is essential that the proper treatment needs to be adapted to each client
especially if it is a co-occuring disorder with abuse of substances or trauma related (Capuzzi &
Stauffer, 2019). The counselor should develop a well rounded understanding of both the
substance they are abusing and the disorder so they can create a better opportunity to aid the
client that is suffering. The client will reach the best result if the scope of their treatment was
designed specifically for them and incorporates an empathic position and treatments that are
supported empirically. The therapeutic environment needs to be a place of compassion and
understanding because it helps create an opportunity for the client to reach the best result
(Capuzzi & Stauffer, 2019).
Treatment Description for SUD
Empirically supported, evidence based treatments are used in both the counseling and
medical field because they use research based practices that have been proven effective
(Chambless, 2012). There are treatment centers and medical professionals that treat people that
suffer from substance abuse that use evidence-based practices during their sessions such as
motivational interviewing, coping skills, cognitive behavioral therapy and contingency
management (Capuzzi & Stauffer, 2019). This methodology has been confirmed to be effective
by tests that were administered by the National Institute on Drug Abuse as well as the National
Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (McGovern & Carroll, 2003). The results of these
tests were empirically researched, there is an abundance of evidence that showed it is an

effective approach that can easily be modified depending on the use and can easily be used
alongside medications (Kadden, 1994). Despite the fact that it has been proven effective many do
not include it when they administer the applications or in their practices. Only twenty five
percent of addiction treatment providers use evidence based treatments as a part of their
counseling routine (McGovern & Carroll, 2003). To increase the use of evidence based
treatments more counseling professionals will have to receive training on the subject, continuous
instruction and proper monitoring by supervisors (Carroll, 2012).
Treatment Differentiations
The Salvation Army offers faith based treatment centers throughout the United States for
adults with substance abuse disorder to rehabilitate by providing individual counseling, groups
therapy, twelve step meeting program and spiritual activities that have been programmed to be a
quality treatment for the client (Wolf-Branigin & Duke, 2007. There are accredited facilities
throughout the United States because they believe spiritual enhancements and counseling for
their mental health have equal parts in the clients rehabilitation process. The Salvation Army is a
direct program that incorporates spirituality into cognitive behavioral therapy (Wolf-Branigin &
Duke, 2007). Clients can either be admitted into a residential program or outpatient treatment for
substance abuse and is provided for any client even if they have limited financial resources
(Wolf-Branigin & Duke, 2007).
Cognitive behavioral therapy is the most common approach as it is used in over ninety
percent of treatment facilities that are in the United States (Capuzzi & Stauffer, 2019). This
method is a common, structured and goal oriented version of talk therapy that mainly focuses on
changing the negative thoughts that are contributing and possibly worsening the emotional
difficulties a client is going through (Capuzzi & Stauffer, 2019). Clients are instructed to develop
