The article by Scott Rae emphasizes how the Bible can be used to shape the discussion on or around the topic of immigration. Frequently addressed is Romans 13:1-2 which advocated for obedience to established governing authorities. Rae suggests that Romans 13 should be seen as the starting point and not the ending point, bringing up the key point that the Bible considers unjust laws, which we are not mandated to follow. The Bible also calls for compassion and care for the vulnerable, such as immigrants and refugees, which Rae sees as a guiding principle on immigration. There should be a balanced approach when it comes to immigration, one that both respects the law and provides a moral obligation to help those in need. In the article Rae highlights the differences between Immigrants and Refugees based on their motivations. Immigrants can choose to migrate where in contrast refugees are forced to migrate to avoid persecution. Rae’s article notes that the legal system treats these two groups differently, as refugees having a protected status; but this distinction only highlights the importance of understanding the diverse circumstances of why people migrate. Rae suggests three practical responses that Christians can give on the immigration crisis. First, individuals should stay informed about issues related to immigration, informed on public policy discussion, and being informed by those involved. Second, after you are informed and formulate your ideas about immigration, then you should advocate for what should be done about the crisis. Third, is to simply pray. Pray for a fair and just immigration policy that works to help those waiting in line but also offers support to those desperately in need of help. Chapter 6 outlines the importance of cultural competence for counselors which will help them confront the challenges of navigating cultural differences. In Chapter 11, it is emphasized that cultural knowledge and self-awareness are crucial for counselors. Both chapters in question are supported by Rae’s article acknowledging the importance of understanding cultural nuances in the immigration debate. And likewise, the practical responses offered by Rae are only emphasized with the textbook’s significance of cultural knowledge for effective counseling. Reference: Rae, S. (2018).
