I.
Concert you “attended” (date, club/venue, name of artist):
I attended (watched) Count Basie and his Orchestra who performed live at the North Sea Jazz
Festival on July 13th 1979.
II.
Stylistic description of artist or group(s). If more than one, list each with a short de
-
scription.
Count Basie and his Orchestra make music that swings with a strong beat. They have a great
rhythm section led by Basie on the piano. The horn players add to the music, and you can hear
each musician's talent when they take their solo performances.
III.
Choose three tunes from the concert
and provide brief commentary for each
by comparing and contrasting the sound and style of each
The first song is "Sweet Georgia Brown." It starts with a happy piano tune, and then
the horns join in, making it lively. The horns play quick bursts, and the tempo is fast.
The next song is "Jada," which is slower and relaxed compared to the first one. It has
a bluesy feel with quiet horns and a prominent piano. There's even a flute solo that
adds to the calmness. Then comes "Watch What Happens," which is in between the
other two in terms of speed. It has a singer, and the lyrics make it romantic. The
horns help highlight the singing, playing louder at the end of each sentence. The
combination of lyrics and instruments gives it a romantic and light feel.
IV.
Choose two soloists from the concert and write a brief review of their performances
as if you were preparing it for a newspaper, magazine, or Internet blog.
The first solo is played on the flute during the song "Jada." I couldn't find the musician's
name, but the solo is amazing. It starts slow and then gets faster. The way they control the
speed is impressive and matches the vibe of the song. The second solo is by Butch Miles on
the drums in the song "Whirley Bird." He begins with a fast, light rhythm on his cymbals and
gradually adds in his other drums. He keeps a very fast beat while staying quiet, creating an
intense feeling. This solo is one of the last of the night and adds a lot of energy.
V.
Briefly summarize your overall opinions or feelings about the concert as a whole.
I liked the high-energy style of the music, and it always kept me interested. I'm a big fan of the
piano, so I enjoyed Basie playing the piano, and I noticed how his piano playing set the beat for
the whole band. One of my favorite parts was when Butch Miles played the drums near the end.
It's incredible how fast he plays while keeping perfect timing. In general, this concert was an ex
-
citing show with lots of impressive solos and different moods.
