1.
How do you define disability? What is the
importance and significance of the study of
disability in the modern context?
A person is considered to have a disability if they suffer from a
physical or mental condition that inhibits their capacity to
carry out responsibilities, engage in particular activities, or
fully participate in society. There is a wide variety of things
that might bring about this disease, such as inherited
problems, injuries, illnesses, or even environmental variables.
Disability is often seen as a medical issue, but it encompasses
social, political, and cultural aspects. Disability studies
emerged from the late twentieth century disability rights
movement, involving researchers from humanities, social
sciences, education, and beyond. They emphasize the
importance of seeing disability as an integral aspect of human
diversity, rather than a problem or tragedy.
2.
Discuss the models of disability. Which model do
you think best fits your own conception of
disability?
The way in which individuals think about disability influences
the way in which they feel about disabled persons. Although
different people have different unique perspectives on
disability, these differing points of view can be grouped into
three overarching models of disability: the moral model, the
medical model, and the social model (Harris, etl. 2012). Each
model discusses the factors that are thought to contribute to
impairment, the proper actions, and the underlying meanings.
3.
How have conceptions of and attitudes towards the
disabled changed throughout history?
Over the course of the last few decades, there has been a
significant shift in attitudes regarding those who have
disabilities. Words like "spastic," "cripple," and "cretin" were
originally used freely and without any thought given to
whether or not they would be offensive. Changes to
legislation and services have had an impact on people's
lives, while the vocabulary surrounding disability has also
evolved. (Harris, etl. 2012).
