HUM 102 Module Two Project Proposal Template
To complete this template, replace the bracketed text with your responses.
Part One: Choose the Creative Works
1.
Describe the two creative works
.
Feel free to elaborate, but make sure you include these three
items:
A.
Your chosen topic (mental health, diversity, or activism)
B.
The names of the chosen creative works
C.
Why you chose those creative works
For this project, I chose the topic of mental health. The works I chose are,
The Perks of Being A
Wallflower
, “Life is Fine” by Langston Hughes, and “Save Myself” by Ed Sheeran. When it comes to
mental health, I’ve had my own personal battles, and I was familiar with a vast majority of creative works
that highlight that. The three I chose are ones that I am familiar with and have grown to appreciate in my
later years.
2.
Describe how the chosen creative works can be used to understand the topic.
A.
How do the different humanities subject areas (visual, literary, and performing arts)
approach the topic?
Mental health is already a schema that many of us have a perspective on. Some may have an
appreciation for the newly adapted guidance that is being given to us, whereas others may determine
that mental health is a hoax. In “Life is Fine” by Langston Hughes, the poem demonstrates the very real
struggles of suicidal ideation while also having the realization that death is permanent. It conveys to the
audience that people can be struggling and have intrusive thoughts but may also not want to die. They
just want internal peace.
The Perks of Being a Wallflower
was a movie I watched when I was still oblivious to the struggles
of people who have experienced trauma. Charlie as the main character suffers from PTSD and after the
death of his Aunt Helen, he spirals. The movie focuses on the wellbeing of people who are included and
accepted in social settings, but also highlights the dark reality for those who have been outcasted. To an
audience, it’s easy to sympathize with Charlie. In a way, the movie guides he audience through the
events leading up to a near-fatal mistake.
“Save Myself” by Ed Sheeran was one of my favorite songs on his
Divide
album. As a listener, If
you took the time to listen to each stanza, you can almost feel the pain. The song talks about giving your
all to help those around you- and while it may seem endearing, it then goes on to talk about none of
those people are ever going to do the same. There are also hints of substance abuse as a means to
completely numb yourself and as an audience member, you can assume that this person is not mentally
sound.
