2 Leonardo De Vincci is a famous artist that was born was born on April 15, 1452 and died May 2, 1519. He was a painter, architect, and an engineer. He created multiple art works that took him years to finish. For example, he was known for Mona Lisa which took him over 16 years to finish that artwork. The piece of painting I chose was “The Last Supper” and this painting took him 3 years to finish, but unfortunately due to an incorrect fresco technique caused his art work to be ruined. He started this painting in 1495 and did not finish it until 1498. The Last Supper is associated with the Renaissance Art movement, which is considered as one of the most important times in Europe. This type of art represents the 15 th century and it focuses on realism (Catani & Mazzarello, 2019). Leonardo used techniques to bring out realism in his artwork. He wanted to be able to catch people’s expression to the detail. He wanted to be able to communicate through facial expressions when it came to his paintings. Da Vinci is known to spend hours of people watching so he would be able to capture expressions in his notebook (Catani & Mazzarello, 2019). He found a technique that he believed that helped his paintings bring out the expression he was would portray in paintings. The way he would do this is by blurring the lines and boundaries, this would bring realism to his artwork. The purpose of this was that he did not believe that people saw sharp lines, but more on unfocused smokiness in the painting. He was the type of artist that would analyze the human face to be able to understand the best way to paint. He also used a fresco technique in his painting that caused his painting to deteriorate over time.
3 The influence that shaped his work was Jesus last meal which comes from the bible story of Jesus and his twelve disciples celebrated Passover meal. Jesus was seated in the middle of the tables and there were six apostles to his right and to his left. This entire painting is also grouped into sections of three. The people that are sitting symmetrically by the table look like they were sectioned into a group with 3 men, there was also three windows in the painting. In this biblical story, there was a betrayal. There is a man with a knife pointed to the other man which shows the betrayal for this last supper (Grieve, 2007) This was an interesting painting to read the background information on. He used different types of expressions in the painting to communicate how the person was feeling. The positioning of each person, there was a purpose for this in the painting. This was just interesting to me because the thought Leonardo put into this painting, having people positioned and the facial expression for him to tell a certain story was interesting. Now that I read more information on the painting, I would have never realized that in his painting there was three men that were paired together in groups and there were also three windows and there was a reasoning behind all of this. This does make me appreciate art work even more because there is a lot that goes on into an artist’s mind to make a painting.
