4-1 Discussion: Diversity and the Humanities
Hello Class
The subculture that I belong to is being a military family.
Military family life is
characterized by mobility, separation, and increased risk for injury or death of the military
member, which impacts the health and well-being of all family members.( Tam-Seto, L)Within
the military community each branch has its own subculture, there are stigmas and stereotypes
about the active-duty members and the type of spouses they choose. In the military it is common
to get married to your high school sweetheart and get married shortly after basic/boot camp. Nine
percent of servicemember are married when they enlist and “
By the end of the first term of
service (typically four years), approximately 42 percent of male enlisted members have become
married” (DOD 2002, August 15
)
Within the Army community, I am often judged by other
spouses.
I met my husband when we were in our 20s and I have a full-time career , am in
college , and am raising a family.
Many spouses stay home and raise childing since many
employers will not hire when their resume reads as military spouse. Employers know that the
applicate will only be here for a few years which makes it hard to get employment.
There are challengers that military families endure that bring the community closer
together.
Children with a parent in the military will never be “from” anywhere. The average
Army family moves every 2-4 years. Soldiers are not only deployed often but are sent on
trainings pulling them away from their families for months at a time. The day of deployment,
homecomings, military balls, promotion ceremonies, etc are only things that people within the
subculture have experienced. These challenges and hardships are what bring the subculture
together.
For outsider’s military life is something they are exposed to in the news and through
movies and tv shows. This representation does not give an accurate view into what the military
communities life is like. These things do not show the everyday challenges and experiences of
the culture. An outsider may live away from their extended family and miss a holiday and thinks
that is a comparison feeling to someone who is deployed and missing a holiday with their family.
Although an outsider will never fully understand the culture and commodity that is
created though being a military family. By adopting both insider and outsider perspectives it
allows people to be more educated on the challenges military families go though .It would help
outsiders be more aware of what goes into being in the military . Employers could see military
spouses looking for employement and see them as being strong and adaptable and not think well
they are only going to be here for a few years, so I don’t want to hire them.
