EC 9: Kumu Hina What did you think of the film? "KUMU HINA" examines the intersections of gender, culture, and identity in the Hawaiian setting in a moving and thought-provoking way. The movie gave a complex account of Hina Wong-Kalu's life, highlighting her work as a cultural champion, teacher, and māhū. The audience was fully immersed in the struggles Hina and the larger Hawaiian community experienced in maintaining their cultural legacy in the face of contemporary pressures thanks to the compelling tale. Did anything surprise you? Why or why not? The video provided enlightening insights on the historical relevance of māhū culture. It was illuminating to see the missionaries' repression of native customs and the ensuing fight for acceptability in modern society. It was encouraging to see how resilient and determined people like Hina and HoŻonani were to claim their cultural places and establish their identities. Name one person or event featured in the film that you found interesting. The story of Hoʻonani's struggle to become a member of the all-male hula group was fascinating. It highlighted the difficulties people have while negotiating cultural expectations that are predicated on gender stereotypes. Moving and inspiring at the same time was Hoʻonani's bravery in stepping out of the conventional hula environment and claiming her uniqueness. How do we navigate between cultural, religious, and personal beliefs? Give an example from the film and offer a personal one too if you want. In the movie, Kumu Hina's mentoring of Hoʻonani demonstrated her attempts to close the gap between her māhū identity and traditional Hawaiian beliefs. This demonstrated how to maintain
cultural traditions while also taking into account changing viewpoints. In my experience, bridging the gap between cultural, religious, and personal convictions requires civil discourse and an open mind in order to promote acceptance and understanding. If Western values and ideas had not been forced upon the Hawaiian land and its people, speculate how today’s non-cis and non-heterosexuality would have been understood and acknowledged. Hawaiian views on gender and sexuality may have persisted in embracing the flexibility inherent in māhū culture if Western standards hadn't been forced upon them. It's possible that non-cis and non-heterosexual identities were more innately accepted, integrated, and valued within the framework of culture. What do you believe we can do to support diverse sexuality? It is necessary to promote inclusion, empathy, and education in order to support different sexuality. Accepting stories like "KUMU HINA" contributes to awareness-building. In order to create a more welcoming society where different sexualities are celebrated rather than condemned, it is important to advocate for inclusive legislation, challenge stereotypes, and encourage courteous discourse.
