Tyler Opila Homework 7 Due: 10/16 11:59 pm Reading Chapters 5 Questions 1. (5.12) Which type of wave has a longer wavelength: AM radio waves (with frequencies in the kilohertz range) or FM radio waves (with frequencies in the megahertz range)? Explain. The wave that has the longer wavelength is the AM radio wave (with frequencies in the kilohertz range). 2. (5.25) What are the three isotopes of hydrogen, and how do they differ? The three isotopes of hydrogen are Deuterium, Protium, and Tritium. They differ in the number of neutrons, the atomic number; the isotopes also differ in their natural abundance. 3. (5.18) Explain how we can deduce the temperature of a star by determining its color. We can deduce the temperature of a star by determining its color because the color of a star shows where the peak wavelength of its’ spectrum is found, so color can show to us the temperature of a star. 4. (5.27) Explain why astronomers use the term “ blue shifted ” for objects moving toward us and “redshifted” for objects moving away from us. Astronomers use the term “Blue Shifted” for objects moving towards us, because as wavelengths get shorter the shift to the blue end of the spectrum. They use the term “Red Shifted” because when wavelengths get longer, they shift towards the red end of the spectrum. Problems 5. (5.41) What is the wavelength of the carrier wave of a campus radio station, broadcasting at a frequency of 97.2 MHz (million cycles per second or million hertz)? The wavelength of the carrier wave of the campus radio station, broadcasting at the frequency of 97.2 MHz is 3.086m. 6. (5.45) If the emitted infrared radiation from Pluto has a wavelength of maximum intensity at 75,000 nm, what is the temperature of Pluto assuming it follows Wien’s law T = (3 x 10^6 nm K) / (75,000 nm) = 40 K
