HOMEWORK VIDEO: One Strange Rock: Shield 1. What are the temperature extremes in space that a space suit must cope with? How much does a space suit cost? The temperature extremes are 250 degrees in the sun and -250 in the shade. A space suit costs $12 million. 2. How did the sun change Mars? The sun destroyed Mars’ atmosphere and the oceans of Mars evaporated into space. 3. What do lava samples have in them? What do they do? What does it tell us about the earth’s interior? Lava samples have uranium and thorium in them. They maintain the heat of the earth. This tells us that the earth’s interior has a raging nuclear furnace at the heart of our planet. 4. What does the iron and nickel in the earth’s outer core produce? How does this protect the earth? The iron and nickel in the earth’s outer core produces its own magnetic field. This protects the earth because it stretches as far as 400 thousand miles into space and surrounds the planet, deflecting radiation. 5. What visual event is a product of the earth’s magnetic field? The aurora is a product of the earth’s magnetic field.
6. How does the intense UV in space endanger astronauts? The intensive UV in space endangers astronauts because it can permanently damage eyesight and be fatal. 7. What percental of UV gets to the earth’s surface? How long will it take to get sunburn without the atmospheric shield? What else does the UV do to living cells? 2% of UV gets to the earth’s surface. It would take seconds to get a sunburn without the atmospheric shield. The UV turns healthy cells cancerous. 8. What molecules in the sky protect us from UV? The ozone layer in the sky protects us from UV. 9. Why must we use gliders to sample the upper atmosphere, and not airplanes? How high can it fly? We must use gliders to sample the upper atmosphere because they don’t have engines and won’t pollute the samples. It can fly 52,000 feet high. 10. What stopped the growth of the ozone hole? What has happened to the ozone hole in recent years? The ban of harmful substances stopped the growth of the ozone hole. The ozone hole has shrunk in recent years. 11.
