ASTR 1000: The Size of our Solar System
Name: _____Abi lochridge__
Be certain to review the scale models
video (D2L --> Content Browser --> Chapter 1), and check out the example of a kitchen table scale model in the ASTR Project Options overview document (D2L --> Content Browser --> Additional Resources) before getting started.
First, check out the links below to get a feel for the sizes of the planets in our Solar System:
http://www.space.com/30610-scale-of-solar-system-amazing-video.html
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NC4pLkUYpjA
Now construct a scale model of our solar system that fits on your kitchen table and another that fits in your driveway. Indicate the position of the Sun, the eight planets, and the asteroid belt. Take photos of each and submit along with this report. (Your model should show the size of the orbits to scale but does not have to include scale models of the planets themselves.)
1.
Calculate the two scale factors that will be required to fit the Solar System on your kitchen table and onto your driveway. Show all necessary conversions.
length of your kitchen table: _________167 cm___________
distance from Sun to Neptune:
_______4.49689728e14 cm_____________
scale necessary:
1-to-_______3.71367e-13 cm_____________
length of your driveway: _______25 ft _____________
distance from Sun to Neptune:
_______

At this scale, what would be the diameter of Earth? Would the Earth’s diameter be about the thickness of a dime, or the thickness of a strand of hair, or the size of a cell, or
the size of an atom, or ??? Show all work and explain all reasoning.
At this scale (tabletop), the diameter of the Earth is less than the thickness of a cell. (Diameter of earth in cm.) 1,247,199,994.8
/ 3.71367e-13 (scale factor in cm for tabletop) = 3.358402859704800125229e21
(thickness of Earth in scale model)
*A cell is about 10 microns, and at this scale earth is about 4 microns. https://www.bing.com/search?

0l7j69i60.9556j0j1&pglt=41&FORM=ANNTA1&PC=HCTS
At this scale (driveway), the diameter of the earth is about the thickness of the strand of hair!
(Diameter of earth in ft) 40,918,635
/ 1.6945e-12 (scale factor in ft for driveway) = 2.4147910888167998244569e19 (Thickness of earth in scale model)
*The typical thickness of strand of hair is 75 microns, and at this scale Earth is 73 microns. http://www.bacteria-world.com/how-big-micron.htm
5.
At this scale, how far would our Moon be away from Earth? Show all work and explain all reasoning.
The moon is 1.261155e+9 feet or 38,440,004,400 centimeters away from earth. 38,440,004,400
/ 3.71367e-13 (scale factor in cm for tabletop) = 1.0350947822503999695698e22 (distance to moon from Earth in centimeters) 1.261155e+9
/ 1.6945e-12 (scale factor in ft for driveway) = 7.4426379462968004219192e20 (distance to Moon from Earth in Feet) 6.
At this scale, where would the Alpha Centauri system (our nearest neighbor star system)
be located? Use Google Maps or a similar resource as needed. Show all work and explain all reasoning.
Alpha Centauri system 1.30985157e17 ft or 3.9924275854e18 cm away from Earth. 3.9924275854e18 / 3.71367e-13 (scale factor in cm for tabletop) = 1.0750625622094001077045e22 (distance from Alpha Centauri system to Earth) 1.30985157e17 / 1.6945e-12 (scale factor in ft for driveway) = 7.7300181174388002958153e22 (distance from Alpha Centauri system to earth)
