Scientific Writing Assignment #3: Searching for Sources
*This assignment was adapted from: Adapted from a Information Literacy Grant written by Brown, C., Sinex, L., and Laherty, J., PSY 102 Introduction to Psychology 2, Online.
Instructions:
Read through the entire document and answer all questions. It would also help with grading if you put your typed answers in a different (but readable) color font
. Save and upload your completed assignment to the associated assignment page on Canvas. It is the student’s responsibility to confirm that the correct file was submitted to Canvas by the due date.
Quick reminder: Make sure that all answers are in your own words. Do not copy and paste directly from any articles, as this is considered plagiarism. Getting Started
In this assignment, you will carry out a literature search and create a research log related to your lab section project question. Specifically, you will develop potential search terms that are related to your research question. Then you will begin searching, recording your process on a research log, analyze the results you have found, and begin modifying your search accordingly.
Before you begin the assignment, read through the pages linked on the assignment page, which
will guide you through the iterative process of searching for sources online. After reading the resources linked on the assignment page, work through the following questions:
1.
(1pt) Record your lab section project question and underline the major concepts. What is the effect of tanning lotion
of a certain SPF
on the survivability of yeast
in comparison to a sunscreen
of the same SPF
?
2.
(8pts) A research log is a document that helps you keep track of and think about how you search for sources. Even for advanced researchers, it is good practice to keep track of your
searches, what worked for you, and what didn't. Use the following table as your research log and begin searching on your research topic/question. Fill in the information on the chart for each search. You must use at least two different search tools/databases, and try at least two different searches for each. Complete a minimum of 8 total searches. To help you get started, consider using some of the major concepts you underlined in question 1 as your keywords

Reflection
Describe your search results. What worked or didn’t work for your search? Do you think
the results of this search provide potential sources for your upcoming paper on Yeast and
UV?
2/13/23
Google Scholar
Tanning Lotion, Yeast Cells, 18,500
For this search I used Google Scholar as the search engine, and I typed up “effects of tanning lotion on yeast cells” into the search bar. I got results separate results for yeast and tanning lotion but no results of them together. 2/13/23
JSTOR
Sunscreen, Yeast Cells

For this search I used JSTOR as the search engine, and I typed up sunscreen and yeast cells into the search bar. From this search I found one article that was interesting and incorporated both yeast cells and sunscreen. The article link is https://doi.org/10.2307/4449576
. This would be a helpful source in understanding the effects of sun protectants on yeast.
2/13/23
PubMed
Sunscreen, Yeast Cells

The psychologist does not ask the students to put their names on the survey; instead, students will put completed surveys into a large box at the back of the room. Because of the low risk involved in participation and the anonymous nature of the survey, the researcher requests to be exempted from formal informed cosent procedures.
