Populations Lab Report
Instructions: The Virtual Populations Lab is on the lesson assessment page. Gather data to evaluate Sebastian’s
Snorkel Spot’s claim that a new factory is polluting the coral reef. Follow the instructions as you move through the lab and record your data and observations in the lab report.
Introduction: If you want to go see one of the most beautiful coral reefs in all of the tropics, Sebastian’s Snorkel Spot is the place to go; at least it used to be. Recently, Sebastian has received many bad reviews on social media. Here’s what visitors are saying: read page 1 of the virtual lab to discover what visitors are saying.
Sebastian needs to figure out what’s happening to the reef in his snorkeling spot, or else he will lose all his customers. A few months ago, a factory opened on the island. He suspects that pollution and runoff from the factory are stressing the coral reef and causing it to die. He will need help examining the coral reef, finding the extent of the damage, and developing a solution to restore the reef and the species that depend on it.
Purpose/Objective: In this lab, you will:
●
examine the effects of pollution on both coral and a native marine species on the coral reef
●
explain how pollution influences the population of coral and a native marine species on the coral reef
●
explain how pollution affects the age structure of a species on the coral reef
●
explain how limiting factors affect the carrying capacity of each species
Observations:
●
Sebastian and his crew have noticed the problems at the coral reef. The water clarity is getting worse, and fewer and fewer fish are being spotted. As a marine science student, you can help Sebastian identify and monitor the problem and help him find a solution.
●
Sebastian provides some video footage of snorkel trips to the reef from before the factory was built. You can use this to
get an idea of what a healthy reef should look like. View this in the Virtual Lab.
Next, you conduct some research and make observations. Your key findings are as follows:
●
The new factory is not using nutrient-removal treatment on the water it releases.
●
Excess nutrients such as phosphates and nitrates encourage algae growth, which decreases water clarity.
●
Algal blooms deplete the oxygen in water, making it difficult for fish and other organisms to survive.
●
The presence of stoplight parrotfish is a good indicator of the biodiversity of the reef.
the health of the coral reef will

Record your hypothesis in the lab report.
Hypothesis: Hypothesis:
Based on these observations, you identify variables for your study and make a hypothesis.
Independent variable: The thing that has changed is the additional pollution and runoff from the factory.
Dependent variable: The data you will collect is on the health of the reef, as measured by water clarity, dissolved oxygen, live coral coverage, and stoplight parrotfish population.
Complete your hypothesis by selecting the correct word.
If pollution levels increase, then the health of the coral reef will (increase or decrease
).
Start Here Lab Report: Title: Luana Beltran, Mrs. Hendrix, 02/03/2024, Effects of Pollution on an Ecosystem
Objective: ●
observe the effects of pollution on coral and native marine life in coral reefs.
●
explain how pollution affects the age structure
●
explain how the pollution affects the population of these species Hypothesis: If pollution levels increase, then the health of the coral reef will decrease, because it will negatively affect the coral and marine life.
Variables: ●
IV: The additional pollution and runoff from factories. ●
DV: The water clarity, dissolved oxygen, parrot fish population, and coral coverage. ●
CV: The ecosystem observed and the five factors recorded. Procedure:
During the research phase, you found that the factory is not using nutrient-removal treatment on the water it releases. Excess nutrients in the water encourage algae growth, which can smother coral. To monitor the water quality and health of
the coral reef, you will collect data on five factors: water clarity, dissolved oxygen levels, percentage of live coral coverage, number of juvenile parrot fish observed, and number of mature parrotfish observed.
The next planning commission meeting is in one month, and Sebastian wants to be able to present them with evidence that the factory is harming the reef and his business. For the next four weeks, Sebastian needs your help to monitor the conditions at the coral reef. At the beginning of each week, you will need to:
●
measure water quality surrounding the reef by taking measurements on the clarity and dissolved oxygen levels
●
measure the percent of live coral coverage
●
count the population of juvenile and mature parrotfish in the reef
Data:
Start by collecting data for each of the factors below for 0-4 weeks. Select each factor below and collect data for weeks 0-4 in the Virtual Lab. Record the data in the data table. Record your data from the virtual lab in the data table.

Data Analysis: Select one abiotic factor
that was monitored, either water clarity or dissolved oxygen level, and create a line graph showing the measurement of the abiotic factor over time. Then select one biotic factor
that was monitored, either coral coverage, juvenile parrotfish, or mature parrotfish, and create a line graph showing the measurement of the biotic factor over time. Must be two different graphs. Insert Chart [Hint: don’t forget to create a line graph
to analyze your data with time on the x-axis.]
Conclusion:
Be sure to answer the following reflection questions as a summary in the conclusion of your lab report:
●
Was your hypothesis correct? Why or why not?
Be sure to include
evidence from the data you collected to support your conclusion.
●
Based on your data, describe the overall trend for each of the five factors that were measured?

Please help me answer this in 10 sentences only.
In the Convention of Biological Diversity (CBD), the precautionary principle read “when there is a threat of significant reduction or loss of biological diversity, lack of full scientific uncertainty should not be used as a reason for postponing measure to minimize or avoid threat”. What is the application of this principle to straddling fish stocks and migratory fishes?

some of the Adélie colonies in this area.
Which statement is supported by both the text and the excerpt above?
All three penguin species, Chinstrap, Adelie, and Gentoo, live only on sea ice.
The food supply for Adelie penguins includes both fish and krill in the Antarctic seas.
Adelie penguins are dependent on the existence of sea ice for access to their food supply.
Temperatures in the Antarctic have increased substantially in the last 60 years.

Summarize;
From my observation post, well camouflaged under some boxwood bushes, I delight in the contemplation of dinco young foxes that play at the door of their refuge. They have come out half an hour ago, with all caution, when the sun was peeking over the peaks. Little by little they have gained confidence; lying in the most comical postures they have been nibbling, only to end up chasing each other openly over the fresh grass that grows before the black hole of the cave. Suddenly the five foxes at the same time rush towards their fort. Almost at the same moment I smell a growing buzzing behind my head, like that produced by a flock of pigeons flying low through an oak grove. First I see a huge shadow, exactly in front of the peephole of my observatory. A brown mass is mistaken for it. It is the royal eagle. With the wings semi-closed, forming an angle with the body, with the claws open and advanced, the bird of Jupiter is materially nailed against the wall of the fox…

ANSWER THE FOLLOWING:
If you are to engage into aquaculture, how will you do it considering your current location and available resources. What species, level of management and culture system will you consider? (imagine your location is Philippines)
On the otherhand, if all resources are available and favorable, what brackishwater and marine species will you grow/culture? Discuss your criteria of considering these species. Describe the level of management and culture system that you will employ.

introduced to the concept of walkability and the impact that environmental pollution can have on chronic diseases. It can be easy to observe issues within your own community, but what can be challenging is to assess and compare your community or local environment to others. In this discussion, you will select one of two tools with which to evaluate your local community on either pollution or walkability.
