CARDIOVASCULAR ACTIVITY Jacob A. Krueger SPHE314 Exercise Physiology Instructor: Dr. Adrienne Herrenbruck 07 April 2023
Electrical Activity of the Heart 1.) The sinoatrial node (SA node) initiates electrical stimulus The atria are activated. 2.) Electrical stimulus created by the SA node will pass through conduction pathways. This will cause the heart’s ventricles to contract and pump blood out. 3.) Stimulated first are the upper 2 chambers of the heart (atria) and contract shortly before the 4.) lower 2 chambers of the heart (ventricles). 5.) Now the electrical impulse travels from the SA node to the atrioventricular node (AV node). A delay occurs at the AV node to allow for blood to be completely pumped. 6.) The impulse now gets transmitted to the atrioventricular bundle. 7.) Impulse travels through the atrioventricular bundle and bundle branches and to the Purkinje fibers. The impulse also reaches the right papillary muscle through the use of the moderator band. Impulse spreads to the contractile fibers of the ventricle. Ventricular contraction begins. Each contraction of the ventricles represents one heartbeat. (Anatomy, 2021) (Davies, 2023)
