BIOL 1103L Assignment: Nature of Science & Scientific Questions Respond to the questions as you work through the lab activities in class. Although you will be working in groups, responses should be in your own words! Gathering Evidence 1. After reviewing the first 4 pieces of evidence, work with your group members to formulate a tentative explanation based on the evidence. (2 pts) Tentative explanation: Together, William and Vicky had a child, and they recently bought him tennis equipment from Goldmans Gym and a new laptop for school. They discovered the business at 7th and Michigan after failing to locate the receipt. His family was compelled to make a donation to the Pediatric Aids Foundation after his son learned that his teammate had AIDS. 2. After review of 2 additional pieces of evidence, confer with your group members and revise your first explanation based on the new evidence. (2 pts) Tentative explanation: Vicky went to her regular $122 OBGYN appointment because she wasn't feeling well. William wasn't too pleased because his automobile had just been returned from the mechanic after being involved in an accident that cost him $2615. 3. Review 2 final pieces of evidence, confer with your group members and revise your explanation again based on the new evidence. (2 pt) Formulate a final explanation based upon all the available data: IVF insemination is being used by Bill and Vicky in their infertility treatment. That would account for the huge expenses Vicky and Bill William are accruing. Why Vicky needs to visit an OBGYN, too! While there, she must undergo numerous tests, AIDS being one of them. They felt compelled to make a donation to the foundation now that their potential threat was eliminated. In order to ensure the safety of the newborn, Tech Bill purchased new cameras and surveillance for their home. Bill has already gone to the store and purchased a baseball and glove for the infant because he is so pleased about it. He also bought the family a minivan out of excitement!
BIOL 1103L Assignment: Nature of Science & Scientific Questions 4. Does reasoning have to be based on facts or can it be inferred from pieces of evidence? Give an example where you inferred a portion of your hypothesis from the evidence provided. (3 pts) In the narrative's progression, a notable detail emerges as Vicky's scheduled OBGYN appointment follows closely on the heels of the disclosure about her and Bill's ongoing IVF insemination journey. Although the narrative refrains from explicitly stating the exact reason behind Vicky's unwell state, a subtle interplay between context and information presented hints at a potential correlation between her fertility treatments and the medical consultation. This veiled connection invites the reader to weave together the narrative threads, thus showcasing an illustrative example of how the process of reasoning can be intricately interwoven with factual cues and astute logical inferences, all cleverly embedded within the given storyline. Scientific Questions 1. From the 6 sample questions provided in class, what two would you choose as the best scientific questions? Explain how each question fit the criteria of a good scientific question. (3 pts) “Does blue food coloring absorb more light than red food coloring?” This question fits the criteria of a good scientific question because of the focus and the ability to decipher a quantifiable result. This question also involves testing variables and doesn’t provide an obvious answer. “Which brand of running shoe holds up the best after 100 miles of activity?” This question provides a slightly quantifiable result on the performance of the running shoe and provides separate testing variables for the experiment. The scientific question has a strong focus and can provide a range of answers. 2. Choose a question to revise, write the original question in the space below. Explain what aspects are missing and then revise the question to better meet the criteria. (3 pts) Original Question: Which brand of running shoe holds up the best after 100 miles of activity? Explanation: the results that would come out of the experiment are not very quantifiable and would not result in a very good experiment. The question is not very focused and is fairly general. Revised Question: Between Hoka and Nike running shoes after running 100 miles, which shoe would deteriorate the least on the heal of the shoe?
