Destiny Mangini 2-8-2024 SCI 333. Milestone two. Product Need: Provide a description of the waste stream or waste issue, including information on the production of the waste and an explanation of the need for the product, including how it is used by society. Animal wastes entering waterways runoff from the farms and contaminate the water. a. Production: Include details about the production of the waste stream or waste issue. Is it generated in a particular place or area? If so, why? Include some relevant statistics about the volume produced. If possible, include supporting evidence such as graphics or images of the process or further detailing. Kewaunee County in southwestern Wisconsin, the second-highest number of concentrated animal feeding operations/ 30percent of private drinking water wells in 2016 were contaminated with E. coli or both from bovine sources according to the test run by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR). “ The Wisconsin Department of Health Services has investigated a number of blue baby syndrome cases,  finding at least three   tied to nitrates in drinking water, and is expecting nitrate concentrations in aquifers to increase. (So far, the Utesches’ well has not been among those with high nitrate levels or   E. coli .)” (Cosier, 2016). Linking to congenital disabilities and baby syndrome, all from contaminated water.
More cows mean more manure. b. Use: How does society use this product? Why is it important to society? III. Disposal Method: Describe how the product is disposed of in your area, including a discussion of the implications of this disposal method and its impact on society. Is it disposed of in a landfill? Is it incinerated? Are there any unique disposal methods needed? Controls and guidelines for the use of manures, slurries, and fertilizers. In Europe, for example, the Nitrates Directive required the establishment of Nitrate Vulnerable Zones, which are areas in which land drains into waters polluted with, or at risk of being polluted with nitrogen. The amount and timing of the nitrogen applications are controlled to minimize the environmental risk, and farmers must comply with the rules. Reference: (2019). Waste (2nd ed.).
