1 Groupings University of the People EDUC 5711: TEACHING FOR DIVERSE AND INCLUSIVE CLASSROOMS Dr. Krista Ganga October 14, 2020
2 Groupings Teachers in a classroom need to use diverse methods of educating to help reach all of the students. Flexible grouping allows a teacher to organize students into various types of groups to instruct them. The students are placed in temporary groups based on a student s needs, current skills, and knowledge to learn a new skill or complete a learning activity (Morin, n.d.). The critical aspect of flexible grouping is that this method allows a teacher to address students' particular needs in the class, unlike static groups that do not consider the needs of the students. The following charts show by age range; subject, activities, and potential grouping arrangements. Age Range/Grade; Elementary Subject Activity Grouping Ideas Students will break into pairs assigned by the teacher with a strong speller and weaker speller. Students will work within each pair to look up in dictionary the definition of each word and each group will create a sentence using each word. Students will practice spelling each of the words with their partner (Cox, 2015). The teacher in the class will write 10 spelling words on board or projector as well as orally saying the word and spelling the letters. The students will be writing the words into their notebooks. The students will look up definitions of the words and the teacher will call on students to have a discussion with the class about the definition (Cox, 2015). Spelling The students in the class are learning 10 new spelling words with definition. Students will receive the words on a worksheet
3 Conclusion Students are individuals who learn in various and different ways. Flexible groups allow a teacher to create temporary groups to help students learn a lesson. The groupings allow the teacher to tailor students in various configurations to assist them in learning. These groupings can change from subject to subject based on the abilities of the students. These groupings allow for more than academic learning; it allows the students to socialize with each other. Since the Age Range/Grade; Elementary Subject Activity Grouping Ideas The small group instruction by ability level. The teacher is able to use different teaching methods based on the ability of the students in the group. The teacher can give extra support as necessary while other students are doing work (Ford, 2005). The students in the class will be reading out-loud in the classroom. Students will read a paragraph or two and than pass the reading to another student. This will continue until the story has been fully read. Reading Students will be reading a story from their textbook Age Range/Grade; Elementary Subject Activity Grouping Ideas The students will be divided into 5 groups with each group taking 1 type of vertebrate. The group will do research and present a small lesson on their type of vertebrate to the remaining members of the class (Ward, 1987). Students will divided in pairs and research the 5 different groups of vertebrates. The pairs will work together learning about each of the different vertebrates. Each group with have a student with stronger comprehension skill with one who has weaker skills. Science Students learning about vertebrate classification
