Part 1: Consultation Role-play scenario: The scenario In this task, you will assist with implementing methods designed to respond to emotional expressions in the workplace. The purpose of your consultation is to: identify and analyse potential emotional stressors identify relevant techniques and methods for responding to potential emotional stressors. 1. Prepare to consult a. Use the potential emotional stressors template provided in Table 2 to identify and assess your potential triggers. Revisit the template to add your responses on feedback and recommended methods after the next task. Understaffed unit with large amount of overtime worked leading to staff burnout 1. CNE and Staff members face understaffed and under resourced unit environment which can potentially lead to burnout. Emotional stressors such as mild annoyance to intense anger may be present in staff members 2. Meeting with staff members to discuss their workloads and to understand their feelings towards the issue as well as managing overtime allocations. Managing staff burnout and ways to reduce stress responses 3. Seek feedback from staff on ways/methods we can use to minimise and reduce the levels of stress related to burnout. 4. Manager to meet with individual staff especially those completing large amounts of overtime to support them and make sure that they are maintaining work- life balance to reduce staff burnout. Also meeting as a group to share and learn from other’s experiences. 2. Speaking to a staff member that was under performing and having a difficult conversation with them. 1. Needed to speak to a staff member who was under performing. I felt nervous, scared, and anxious as I did not know how they would react. 2. My methods for responding to my own potential emotional stressors is to eliminate the negative ideas that come from fear. This is my job to have these difficult conversations and at the end of the day it is patient safety at risk if this conversation is not had. Preparing for the conversation is the best method to respond to my emotional stressors 3. Seek feedback from the staff member to on ways/methods that I can use to improve delivery of a difficult conversation 4. Recommended methods for responding to my potential emotional stressors include preparing for the conversation thinking about all the scenarios and situations/directions that the conversation could take and with potential solutions to these scenarios. 2. Facilitate a 20-minute consultation with your co-workers. 3. Monitor and assess emotional expression a. Based on your interaction with your co-workers during the consultation, create an emotional intelligence profile for two co-workers using the template provided below. b. Use these emotional intelligence profiles and the identified emotional expressions to create a plan to develop at least two informal activities to respond to the emotional expressions of the team members.
