2 Leadership Skills Leadership skills are something we all possess. The ability to identify strengths and weaknesses are what we can use as a basis to improve our leadership skills and ways to implement them. Four leadership skills that I have self-identified as strengths are as follows: deliberative, self-assurance, adaptability, and positivity. I will discuss these four leadership skills, how I implement them in life and my career, and the ways I intend to maintain them as I progress. The first leadership skill that I have identified is the ability to be deliberate because as a leader, this is critical. Leaders are expected to not only make important decisions but the right decisions for the success of the goal at hand and the betterment of the people affected by these decisions. In my current career field as an Armament Instructor, I make deliberate decisions daily. I oversee up to 12 students per class by mentoring, guiding, and assisting them for the three months that they are under my supervision. At times, my judgment is relied upon to ensure that they are getting the proper training and maintaining schedules and timelines while enforcing military standards. Leaders are also required to be self-assured. We are entrusted to coach, guide, and inspire team members to execute plans to reach a common goal. Without someone who is confident in their position, it leaves room for divisiveness and confusion amongst the team who look to leaders for guidance. As I instruct students, I have learned that they look up to me for more than just education. They trust me to prepare them for whatever obstacles they may encounter while doing their job and oftentimes ask for input on their personal lives as well. My confidence in leading them comes from my many experiences and they rely on me to educate
3 them to the best of my abilities. If the person that they look to as an example is not self-assured, they will lose confidence and respect in me as a leader. As self-assurance is important, so is adaptability. I must be able to accept that change is to be expected and, in some instances, it will be required. Not every situation will require the same level of attention or procedure. Being adaptable to these situations will require trust and belief from the leaders and team members. To help me improve my adaptability, I must seek new challenges as this will help me uncover new ways of thinking and produce a growth mindset while enabling a learning environment within the organization. (Alan Trivedi, ADAPTOVATE. 2021) There must be a certain level of “buy-in” to positively influence the work culture to ensure that it is not damaged as a result. Positive psychology as mentioned in Chapter 6 challenges us to focus on strengths and not weaknesses to change our perspectives when viewing change. (Northouse, 2021). This belief will contribute to the success and happiness of many teams if effectively implemented. As I lead, I always try to provide feedback as necessary but reassure them by also pointing out things that they have done well. Positive reinforcement helps remind members that even in error, there is goodness, and this keeps them motivated to do better. I must remind them that if I am correcting them, I am protecting them and I rely on the same feedback to maintain my positivity when handling daily tasks. Two other leadership skills that I find to be important are being strategic and disciplined. There will be obstacles along the way when leading a diverse team. Differences in opinions, morals, and ethics will play a factor at times, and having a proactive or strategic approach will be necessary. Discipline will keep your team focused and detail-oriented on tasks instead of distractions and ultimately will encourage all members to be accountable for their individual
