Set B Compare and contrast the advantages of an APN entrepreneur and an APN intrapreneur. What are the challenges/ barriers to these 2 business models? Which would you prefer and why? Something I find exciting and appealing about APN roles is that there is a great deal of variety in practice and in how I could one day go about framing my future as an APN. Tracey et al., details the two different styles of business modalities of entrepreneurship versus intrapreneurship (2023). Like most decisions, it would be important to take into account the challenges one may face with each unique model. One of the main takeaways or differences that strike me right away is the independence of entrepreneurship, which while somewhat appealing, can come with challenges such as needing to drum up business if practicing privately, maintaining ones own liability insurance, needing to be more business savvy, etc. The challenges I see in the latter, intrapreneurship, are the opposite, in that this may require more flexibility for collaboration, for working beneath other healthcare umbrellas, following previously set protocol, likely less room for creative modifications, and so on. It is hard at this time personally to determine which I would ultimately prefer. At this moment I’d lean toward intrapreneur but this may be due in part to my being a relatively new nurse. I do have interest in entrepreneurship, as my parents were business owners and have instilled this drive for independence to build and flourish; but it is hard to say whether I’d feel comfortable with this in a nursing sense as a large part is risk-taking (Tekin & Bekar, 2022). At this point, if I were to pursue APN I’d likely want to start off intrapreneurial as I gained experience and role transition, but would one day aspire to move toward an entrepreneurial APN role.
