Jasmine Bowser BUS 400 module 6 Journal 12/03/2023 6-1 Harvard Business Review Simulation and Journal Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Hiring Practices Throughout the final simulation exercise, it became evident how much transformation occurs within a business and the potential impact on its future. In the initial run, I attempted to strike a balance between family desires and business requirements. During that phase, the company attained nationwide business presence, with average scores in both ownership and family aspects. In the second attempt, my focus shifted towards hiring talented professionals outside of the family business, believing it to be in the company's best interest. Embracing new ideas became necessary as the company underwent tremendous growth. These decisions facilitated business growth and led to more expansion. Therefore, the entry in the third simulation phase assured me that the company will accomplish everything it is capable of. During this stage, we had an international business setup and earned average family scores but maintained high ownership scores. It is intriguing that regardless of my focus on the family dimension of the business, I consistently received a medium score in that area. No matter what decisions are made for the business, complete satisfaction within the family will never be achieved. Thus, I recognized that diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) would be crucial for the company's success despite familial opposition. I am firmly convinced that the company excelled in promoting diversity and inclusion when hiring across different generational lines. In the initial mock assessment, success was had in adhering to families’ requests as part of the preferences. Nonetheless, we came across many difficulties like appointing non-competent relatives. Therefore, it was crucial for us to employ
Jasmine Bowser BUS 400 module 6 Journal 12/03/2023 competent individuals to foster our firm’s development. We had a similar approach on our third exercise and fortunately all went well. This helped us avoid recurring mistakes in later simulation attempts and eventually succeed. These decisions paved the way for present and future prosperity for the company. Places to improve upon Although the organization performed admirably, there's always potential for enhancement. The enterprise could have placed a greater emphasis on its founding principles. It is better to recruit staff whose values match the organizational values rather than forcing the values to fit the company’s diversity. Equal opportunity for job promotion, incentives, and leave/vacation time. All employees should be bound by the same regulations irrespective of whether they are family members or externals. During the game, I also observed that their livelihood depends on business. Therefore, there is a need for consistency in rules as well as policies that will result in happy employees. One’s relatives’ influence should be disregarded when providing promotions, rewards, and free time. Corporate Social Responsibility Community and social initiatives The organization's involvement in contributions to the community and social initiatives has diminished over time. In the company's early days, the founding members prioritized engaging with the community and their clientele. One way they connected with the local community was by placing beehives on properties throughout the neighborhood. " He began to put hives in other properties around the area, starting with his neighbors, who were happy to have bees pollinating their gardens. Once he made the rounds of his neighbors, he began to go
Jasmine Bowser BUS 400 module 6 Journal 12/03/2023 further afield. He knew many of the larger houses in the countryside were second homes of wealthy families who only came to visit during holiday times or occasional weekends. They, too, were happy to have Harsh maintain his bee boxes on their properties " (Family Business Simulation: Honey Heritage, n.d.). However, once they stepped down and new generations assumed leadership over time, this priority diminished. The focus of new management became maximizing profits. To be fair, there were indications that the honey market was stagnating due to artificial sweeteners being developed and promoted to consumers. I think my choices in the simulation influenced these initiatives because when faced with choosing between the company and customer, I sided with the customer. Places to improve upon Some important aspects which a company should take into consideration are getting feedback from customers and holding more community events in order to refine and improve their company’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs and involvements. “Customer feedback is a valuable source of information for any business, but it can also help you improve your corporate social responsibility (CSR) benefits. CSR benefits are the positive impacts that your business creates for society and the environment through your actions and policies. By listening to your customers, you can align your CSR goals with their needs and preferences, increase their satisfaction and loyalty, and enhance your reputation and credibility” (How can you improve your CSR benefits with customer feedback, 2023). Nevertheless, involving in community based activities help business building robust linkages with the target audiences and showing genuine passion towards enhancing society's prosperity. “Customers expect companies to give back to the communities they serve, by donating time and money to social, environmental, and economic causes and savvy businesses have heard this message loud and
