Journal: Economic Environment
The current economic environment affects my company in various ways. We see a lot of these effects in the government contract we currently hold. This contract controls hiring and resources available to our division. It requires certain levels of government access, and we are dependent on the government in obtaining these access levels. It requires extensive background checks, that may include government employees to administer polygraphs and psychological evaluations. It also requires a final approval from the government, spelled out in an eligibility letter. Current events and budget constraints are creating large obstacles and challenges for our company. As the government prepares to shutdown some of its operations, we are unable to continue processing some of our current applicants. Should we lose employees through retirement, change of employment, or long-term illness, we may not be able to meet the requirements within the contract. However, since we are considered a tier 1 asset, we continue to operate within a government shutdown. This provides certain peace of mind and confidence in job security with our current employees. It enables us to maintain a higher level of employment, in maintaining the employment levels within the contract. If the shutdown continues for a long period of time, it could affect applicants’
motivation in continuing to pursue employment with our company. This currently is the biggest economic impact on our company.

Risk in the widest sense is not new to business. All companies are exposed to traditional business
risks: earnings go up and down as a result of such things as changes in the business environment,
in the nature of competition, in production technologies, and in factors affecting suppliers. The
issue of risk has captured considerable attention from corporate management in recent years, as
financial risk management has become a critical corporate activity. Regulators have also
responded with new legislation, regulations, and practices that seek to improve corporate
governance standards.

On Sunday morning, a major international news organization broke a story that the company who manufactures three critical custom John Deere parts is treating their employees as slave-labor. To compound problems, a terrorist group launched an attack in a Middle Eastern country where the back-up supplier is located. The back-up supplier’s factory was badly damaged by a bomb and will be out of commission for at least 12 months. The “good news” is that they will sell you one-month of parts at 1000% the normal price. The final challenge is that the US government in January 2022 will require tracking and auditing on manufacturing inputs purchased abroad, which means that John Deere will have to devote extra company resources to maintaining compliance.
Discuss options for addressing this situation in the short-term and long-term. Put together detailed strategic recommendations for managing future costs and risks over the next 5 years(Branding; Production; Sales; etc.

Now that we've looked at the operations of the stock market, let's review how well we can predict the future. If you had an aunt who offered to buy you 50 shares of any stock you desired, which company would you choose, and why would you select them? Part of your post should address 1. the current price and 2. if you intend to hold on to the stock for a long time or see it as a short term investment.
While I won't be in touch to remind you, write down the particulars of stock somewhere and check it out around the same time next year... see how you did "in the market"!

Alamo Car Rentals
In the early 1990s, Alamo was the most profitable (as a percentage of sales) and fastest growing rental car company in America, despite being only the fifth largest. Its low-cost operating model enabled it to dominate leisure rental markets such as Florida and Hawaii. But Alamo’s management was impatient for growth and had the cash to pursue it. Within the United States, the largest and most lucrative rental car segment was business travel that originated at airports. Alamo figured that even if it could win only a small share of that market by undercutting the rates offered by Hertz and Avis, it could generate a lot of profit given its low overhead costs per car.
That was not to be, for reasons that in retrospect were entirely predictable. Alamo succeeded in pursuing individual, budget-conscious business travelers, but not the large corporate accounts that comprised the most volume. Alamo had neither the facilities nor the experience to woo and satisfy business…
