CHE 110 Module Two Activity Worksheet Template Kia Bowen Healthcare Administration, Southern New Hampshire University HCM 440: Healthcare Research & Eval Professor: Dr. Rachaline Napier January 21, 2024 CHE 110 Module Two Activity Worksheet Template Identify the population related to your chosen issue. Be specific as you describe those who are impacted by this issue. Details might include gender, geographic location, age, ethnicity, race, socioeconomic status, and more. Teen pregnancy affects "The US teen birth rate (births per 1,000 females aged 15 to 19 years) has been declining since 1991. Teen birth rates continued to decline from 17.4 per 1,000 females in 2018 to 16.7 per 1,000 females in 2019. This is another record low for US teens and a decrease of 4% from 2018.1,2 Birth rates fell 7% for females aged 15 to 17 years and 4% for females aged 18 to 19 years." (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2021) This issue affects those of all races, but sadly, others more than some, "In 2019, the birth rates for Hispanic teens (25.3) and non-Hispanic Black teens (25.8) were more than two times higher than the rate for non-Hispanic White teens (11.4). The birth rate of American Indian/Alaska Native teens (29.2) was highest among all races/ethnicities." (CDC, 2021) "Birth rates are higher among American Indian/Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander, Hispanic, and Black adolescents than among teens overall. In 2020, American Indian/Alaska Native adolescent females ages 15-19 had the highest birth rate (25.7 births per 1,000 females ages 15-19), and Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander adolescents had a birth rate of 22.6. Asian adolescents had the lowest rate (2.3)." (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2021) Identify the stakeholders related to your chosen issue. What individuals and organizations are related to this issue? What individuals and organizations are important resources as this issue is addressed? Key stakeholders include teen mothers, parents, community leadership, and primary care providers. Family is a massive part of the resource community when it comes to the prevention of teen pregnancy. It has become more challenging these days due to social media, in a sense, glorifying it as opposed to placing an unhealthy stigma on teen pregnancy. I feel as though family education and understanding that there are other avenues in life, such as practicing safe sex in cases in the event where we can not deter those from practicing abstinence. Several
community-based programs aid in the reduction of teen pregnancy, such as TPP (Teen Pregnancy Prevention) and sites such as youth.gov that offer resources. "At the community level, teens who have mentors and have more connection to their communities are less likely to engage in sexual activity, and those who live in communities with higher rates of substance abuse, violence, and hunger are more likely to start having sex early and to have a child" (Office of Population Affairs, 2021) Why does this problem need to be addressed? What will happen if this issue is not resolved? Far too many young girls are losing their sense of childhood to become mothers, whether by choice or none of their own. We have to stop the cycle. We have families who have not had the luxury of having that village to assist in raising these babies that are born to young people, and that then becomes the burden of the state, or, even worse, these newborn lives are being discarded carelessly. The problem has increasingly grown to affect all those that we may care about, regardless of race or social status; the difference is how teen pregnancy is handled sadly among the races. What information did you gain through websites and other sources to support your answers? What websites and other sources, including those listed at the top of this worksheet, are important to your issue? I gained much insight into this topic. I have seen so many stories of these young girls and even males affected by childbearing at such an innocent age that it has become a societal norm and should not be. I and my siblings chose to ignore the "curse" and take a different path than that shown, and it turned out to be the best. I realized that parenting is not easy at any age, but being an adult allows for much more knowledge than the teenage mind allows. While reviewing the County Health Ranking site, "Multi-component interventions are broad-based programs that aim to reduce risky behaviors in young people through various combinations of education and skills building. They may take place in schools or in the community at multiple levels and activities can include classroom instruction, mentorship, service learning or volunteering, work experience and life skills, and contraceptive education or services."
