Discussion:
The R
f
values help us determine the distance the solvent and the compounds have
traveled. It is calculated by dividing the distance traveled by the compound by the distance
traveled by the solvent. The unknown was determined by determining the R
f
value of the
compound and comparing it with the R
f
values of the known compounds. The highest R
f
value in
the four known compounds was ibuprofen and the lowest was caffeine. Ibuprofen was with a
value of 0.96 whereas caffeine was with a value of 0.3. After calculating the R
f
value of the
unknown, it was found that the unknown compound had a R
f
value of 0.9, which matches the R
f
value of aspirin which was also 0.9. For the β-Carotene Isolation, my partner had made an error
by not saving the crude sample. Due to this our we only had two samples to perform the β-
Carotene Isolation.
The R
f
value of the standard β-Carotene was 0.94 and the purified sample had
a R
f
value of 0.9. The crude sample was supposed to have the lowest R
f
value as the β-Carotene
was supposed to be separated from the crude samples as the isolation process was being
conducted. The compounds that traveled the farthest have the greatest affinity for the solvent.
Therefore, the R
f
values of the compounds were determined and the crude sample was supposed
to indicate the success of the isolation process.

If possible, replace an H atom on the a carbon of the molecule in the drawing area with a methyl group substituent, and replace an H atom on the ß carbon
with a hydroxyl group substituent.
If one of the substituents can't be added for any reason, just don't add it. If neither substituent can be added, check the box under the drawing area.

4. Start with NH3 and show step-by-step how the compound N-sec-butyl-N-isopropyl-3-pentanamine can be
formed. Draw and name the reactants and products in each reaction (3 separate reactions.)
5. Salicylic acid (shown below) is a polyfunctional molecule (contains more than one functional group.) Circle and
identify the functional groups on salicylic acid. Salicylic acid can react with ethanoic acid (acetic acid) to form
aspirin. It can also react with ethanol to form ethyl salicylate, a compound with a minty smell used in perfume
and artificial flavors. Draw out structures to illustrate each of these reactions. Discuss how these two reactions
are similar and how they are different.
