Context (approximately 1-1.5 pages): (i) Begin the report by researching both the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), and their historical contexts. Write a brief summary of the UNDRIP and UDHR, their significance, and the fundamental principles it upholds. Discuss the ways they align (or misalign) with the EGBC Code of Ethics. Case Study Analysis (approximately 1-1.5 pages): (ii) Select a real-life case study that involves a human rights violation on an engineering project. It can be a recent event or a historical incident. Describe the case study, highlighting the specific human rights that were violated, and provide background information to help readers understand the context. (iii) Analyze the impact of the human rights violation on the affected individuals or communities as well as the engineering project itself. Discuss the consequences they faced and any efforts made to seek justice or address the violation. (iv) Reflect on the role of advocacy in this case study. Identify any individuals, organizations, or movements that have taken a stand to promote and protect human rights in response to the violation. Evaluate the effectiveness of their advocacy efforts and discuss any challenges they faced.
Guidance Framework (approximately 1-2 pages): (v) The consulting engineering company in which you are employed is contemplating expanding its activities so as to participate in overseas projects in multiple countries. However, company management wishes initially to establish a guidance framework on its roles and activities in these countries with respect to: various forms of human rights abuses (including limitations on female and minority rights, torture and summary executions), bribery and corruption, autocratic governments, and limitations on freedom of the press. Your team in required to provide a preliminary guidance framework for presentation to company management. As part of the plan, you may consider the range and nature of human rights violations that may occur; potential breaches of the EGBC Code of Ethics; respect for local laws and customs; potential reputational damage; the influence and significance of the host country with respect to trading, diplomatic, business and other relationships; approaches to maximizing benefits to the host country's citizenry; and approaches to maximizing benefits to your company and its employees. Note that, while your team may engage in respectful discussion of specific examples, your submission should be generic and refer to underlying principles, without singling out specific countries.
