Interview question and answers
What inspired you to choose your current career path ?
I chose civil engineering because I've always been drawn to math, science, and practical problem-solving. I found the idea of designing and constructing buildings, bridges, and other infrastructure fascinating. Growing up, I enjoyed working on hands-on projects and seeing how structures come together. I saw civil engineering as a field where I could apply my skills to make
a tangible impact on the world, improving the way people live and interact with their environment."
How did you find this job ?
During my job search, a fellow classmate who was employed at my current company recommended that I submit an application. Following their suggestion, I applied and secured an interview.
Can you share a memorable moment or achievement from your career?
One of the first memories I have of the job which was really special for me is when I became the employee of the month for the first time What are the most important preparations for a role like yours, for example in life, school, work experiences and other activities ?
Growing up, I was deeply intrigued by mathematics and science, which laid the foundation for my interest in engineering. Throughout school, I focused on subjects like physics and mathematics to build a strong academic background. In university, I pursued a degree in civil engineering, which provided me with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. Additionally, I actively engaged in internships and practical projects during my studies, allowing me to apply classroom teachings to real-world scenarios. Outside academia, I participated in extracurricular activities related to engineering or community development, which further honed my problem-solving abilities and teamwork skills
What does a standard workday look like ?
Since I work Hybrid, I work some days from home and some days from the office. Currently I work the majority of the time from home and go to the office once a week. On a usual day, I start
work around 7 and end by 6 in the evening.
What are the biggest challenges and biggest rewards in your job ?
As a cost consultant, the biggest challenge often revolves around balancing client expectations and budget constraints while delivering high-quality services. Navigating complex projects and
constantly evolving market dynamics can also pose significant challenges. On the flip side, the most rewarding aspect lies in providing clients with cost-effective solutions that optimize their projects, seeing tangible results that positively impact their bottom line. Additionally, the opportunity to collaborate with diverse teams and contribute to innovative projects brings a sense
of fulfillment and professional growth.
What do you wish someone would have told you before you started this career and what would you do differently?
I wish I'd known the significance of staying adaptable in a rapidly evolving industry. Also, focusing on broader skill development early on would have been beneficial.
How has your career evolved over the years ?
My career as a cost consultant has evolved from executing tasks to leading teams and providing strategic guidance as an associate director. I've transitioned to handling larger projects and contributing to the firm's overall direction and growth.
What motivates you in your job ?
to solve complex problems and find cost-effective solutions for clients What skills or qualities do you believe are most essential in your field?
Key skills in cost consulting include technical expertise, strong analytical and communication skills, financial acumen, project management abilities, attention to detail, and teamwork.
How do you maintain a work-life balance ?
Balancing work and personal life in cost consulting involves effective time management, setting boundaries, and prioritizing personal time alongside work commitments.
What advice would you give to someone starting in your field?
For someone starting in cost consulting, I'd recommend focusing on continuous learning, staying updated with industry trends, and building a strong foundation in technical skills. Seek mentorship, embrace challenges as learning opportunities, and cultivate effective communication
and problem-solving skills. Also, aim to build a network within the industry and be proactive in seeking diverse project experiences to broaden your expertise.
