DOCUMENTATION OF PLANNING CYCLE
Name of Experience: Mary
Number of Children: 1
Children’s Ages: 3
Date of Implementation:
PART 1
Collect Information – Observation
What do you observe or notice? Look for the extraordinary in the ordinary moments by making learning visible.
Mary loved playing with fish. “I want to catch fish”, she said. The teacher attached the magnet to the stick as the fishing rod. Mary started to catch the fish and placed it inside her bucket. She continued to add the fish she caught inside the bucket. “1,2,3,4,5 – I have five fishes”, she said. When she finished catching all the fish magnets, she put them inside the bucket. Question and Analyse - Observation
What do you understand about what you observed? What did you find interesting or extraordinary? What learning is being demonstrated? What can you extend on? Suggest few experiences. What are the interests and strengths of child/ren observed? Link the information to EYLF/VEYLDF learning outcomes.
Through this experience it is obvious that Mary is a confident and involved learner. She developed thinking skills and tried new things and engaged fully in learning, which links to EYLF learning outcome - 4.1 Children develop dispositions for learning such as curiosity, cooperation, confidence, creativity, commitment, enthusiasm, persistence, imagination and reflexivity.
PART 2
Plan
Learning Intention/s to achieve by the end of experience (one or two):
For children to understand… For children to explore…For children to practice… etc
For children to develop counting skills.

Strategies:
What strategies you might use to promote children’s interest, play and learning? This might include interations, resources, intentional teaching. You might include some examples of modelling, scaffolding or open ended questions. How will you encourage children to learn from each other? How will the environment support play and learning?
I plan to develop Mary’s interest in counting through different experiences. I will provide Mary with the experience to use the beads in the basket to colour sort. In addition, I will also provide an abacus with large, colourful beads. It involves helping Mary understand the meaning of numbers and the right sequence for numbers. Furthermore, this learning experience will also work on her fine motor skills and practice colour recognition.
Act and Do (Implementation)
Implement your experience:
Did you need to modify for any reason? Any emergent experiences that arose? Give specific examples of children’s involvement. What learning processes have you observed the children using (problem solving, inquiry, experimentation, hypothesising, researching, investigating…)?
Mary began to sort the beads in the different coloured baskets and showed an interest in colour. Then she showed interest in playing the abacus with colourful beads. I lined all the beads up on the left side and showed Mary how she could slide one bead at a time towards the right. I counted the beads
with her. Mary quickly grasped the concept and started to slide one red bead, two blue beads, three yellow beads and so on.
Review and Reflect (Evaluation)
Review: With the learning aims and the EYLF/VEYLDF learning outcomes in mind, evaluate the learning and the planning. What worked well? What can you improve? Do you need to repeat, refine or extend the plan? How will you follow up? Through this learning experience I have learnt Mary is able to count to 20 confidently. I was pleased to see Mary engaging and learning about this. I would like to continue to help Mary learn to count.
Reflect:
What did you learn about yourself and your practice as a teacher. Any changes to your practice as a result?
I felt confident in my teaching with children and would like to continue to provide diverse learning experiences for children.
