EDS 310 PB IRIS Module Due: February 6, 2022
1.
Briefly describe three of the benefits of implementing comprehensive classroom behavior management. *Three benefits of implementing comprehensive classroom behavior management would be helping the students and teachers understand what is expected within the classroom, minimize the other disruptive behaviors that are occurring, and helping students to feel safe within the classroom, both physically and emotionally. 2.
Using your own words, explain the meaning of “cultural gaps” and describe two culturally sustaining practices teachers can use to address them. *Cultural gaps are described as any great differences between a teacher (or school system) and students who are ethnically or racially diverse when it comes to world views, values, and expectations. Two culturally sustaining practices that teachers can use to address cultural gaps are to evaluate current classroom practices such as identifying the foundations that are already put into place and establish and teach clear classroom expectations that help students feel safe and secure. 3.
Identify three of the six key principles of classroom behavior management outlined in the module and offer specific example of how a teacher might use each of them in the classroom. *1. Plan early. Provide a bell ringer activity for students to work on as they get settled into class for the day. This will bring their focus on the task at hand rather than potential misbehavior. 2. Focus on the positive. Implement a system such as the “I caught you being good” system and enter their name into a drawing for a prize at the end of the week. 3. Use high quality instruction. Use engaging content within the delivery of the instruction (a game, dance, song) so students don’t become bored or feel as if they aren’t being challenged academically. 4.

1.
List two of the practices listed in the module. *One practice Ms. Rollison can use to develop positive climate in her classroom would be to “build and maintain authentic relationships with students and families.” Another practice that she can use is to “communicate with civility and respect.”
2.
Explain two action steps that Ms. Rollison can take to implement these practices. *Two action steps that Ms. Rollison can take to implement these practices are to create a welcoming and supporting environment and use body language, gestures, and vocal tones that reflect understanding, patience, and acceptance. She can create a welcoming and supporting environment by welcoming each student in every morning with their choice of greeting (high five, hug, handshake, etc.). She can communicate with civility and respect by changing her tone of voice to a calming tone when addressing students, so they feel safe. 5.
Mr. Kwon is a new teacher setting up a structured classroom for 25 4th-grade students. Though he is excited to use lots of hands-on activities and types of instruction across content areas, he is uncertain how to structure his classroom to keep his students on task, engaged, and learning throughout the school day.
a.
Offer two considerations that Mr. Kwon should keep in mind when arranging the physical elements of his classroom. *Two considerations that Mr. Kwon should keep in mind when setting up his classroom would be to arrange the classroom furniture to create a smooth traffic flow and to place frequently used supplies and classroom materials in easy to reach locations. b.
Explain why each of these is important. *By arranging classroom furniture to create a smooth traffic flow, teachers are able to increase classroom safety by not having students trip when in the classroom, or stumbling or falling while teaching, By placing classroom supplies and materials in easy to reach locations, students build a sense of independence within the learning environment and are more likely to use the materials if they easily accessible.
