JOY IN THE WORKPLACE FORCE FIELD ANALYSIS Force Field Analysis Template In the table below, list your recommendation of a social communication strategy or technology strategy for implementing the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) Framework for Improving Joy in Work in the workplace. Then, list five facilitating forces and five restraining forces for and against implementing this recommendation. Using the following scale, score each of your facilitating and restraining forces from 1 to 5 according to the degree of influence each force would have on your recommendation: 1 = very weak 2 = slightly weak 3 = neither weak nor strong 4 = slightly strong 5 = very strong To calculate the “Facilitating Forces Total Score” , add your five scores for the facilitating forces and enter this number in the last row of the chart. To calculate the “Restraining Forces Total Score” , add your five scores for the restraining forces and enter this number in the last row of the chart. To calculate the “Force Field Analysis Total Score” , subtract the Restraining Forces Total Score from the Facilitating Forces Total Score and enter this number in the middle column of the last row of the chart. If the difference is positive, move forward with implementing the recommendation. If the difference is negative, reconsider implementing the recommendation.
JOY IN THE WORKPLACE FORCE FIELD ANALYSIS Score (1-5) Facilitating Forces for Recommendation Recommendation Restraining Forces against Recommendation Score (1-5) 5 Midshift nurses can give lunches to dayshift or might shift nurses which can improve morale because staff nurses are getting their uninterrupted breaks Hiring mid-shift (for example 1030a-11p) nurses to lessen workload on nurses and increase patient satisfaction Increased budget for staffing 5 4 Since staffing will be increased, patient satisfaction should also increase since there are more staff to attend to patient care needs. If low census, the number of nurses on the floor can exceed the number of patients to be taken care so productivity rates might become low 4 5 Morale would be higher since staff nurses are less fatigued and burnout since staffing is increased and they will have a dedicated staff for lunches and breaks New midshift nurses will have to be oriented so this can contribute to low productivity rates 4 5 Midshift nurses can relieve nurses who go home early or who have shifts that end early which can increase census and increase revenue for the faciltiy Staff nurse who are already hired as dayshift or nightshift might want to change their shift to midshift which can cause low staffing on their respective shifts 4 4 Quality of care is increased since there is always an extra person to help with two-nurse tasks and an extra nurse can always do periodic rounds on the floor to make sure all patients have what they need. If low census, some staff might have to be sent home early or flexed. 4 Facilitating Forces Total Score: 23 Force Field Analysis Total Score: 2 Restraining Forces Total Score: 21
