Assessment for learning is a critical component within instruction. It is important that assessments are purposeful in order to support the learning process for each student. The quote by Hertiage and Wylie regarding inform learning is referencing how educators can provide information to students to support the learning process. My view on the purpose of assessment is both positive and negative. As I grew up, I hated taking assessments. I felt like every time I walked through he doors to school, I was faced with another assessment. I often experienced anxiety when it came to taking tests and never felt like I was able to fully reflect my true intelligence or ability due to feeling overwhelmed. However, as I have continued my education and now work within the school system, I am able to see how assessments can help educators plan instruction and support students. My favorite type of assessment is think, pair, share. Think, pair, share, as a formative assessment, “gives students time to think and respond and help each other, by which time the thought be a powerful factor in improving students' ability to respond to questions” (Sumarni, 2016). Based on what I have learned this week, I agree with the above quote because it is important that educators are able to see where students are academically to ensure that the learning process remains on track for each student. The above quote does align with effective curriculum evaluation because educators are taking the time to see what students know and understand. In doing so, the educators must be able to ensure the curriculum is easy to follow and implement as well as determining how students are responding to the information being taught. The results of the assessment enable educators to effectively evaluate the curriculum.
As an educator, I would apply this concept in a professional context by continuing to assess my students throughout their lessons to ensure that their learning is informed. As stated in Colossians 3:23, “ Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters” ( New International Version , 2011).
