Discussion #4 HRM 300 Motivational interviewing is a relationship and client-centered system of change by which the counselor utilizes various techniques and interpersonal skills known to be effective agents of change (Capuzzi and Stauffer, 2019). The counselor will support behavior change and help the client adapt skills to reach their goal techniques. Cognitive behavioral restructuring focuses on behavioral self-control training, community reinforcement, contingency management and behavior contracting, social skills training, and behavioral couples-family counseling (Capuzzi and Stauffer, 2019). Counselors will the client coping skills to be able to resist substance use and reduce problems associated with substance abuse and dependence (Capuzzi and Stauffer, 2019). Solution- focused therapy is about positive changes and the counselor assuming the client wants to change. This is a short-term goal to help with solutions rather than focusing on the problem. Using Motivational interviewing for Tom situation the techniques I chose are asking open ended questions and eliciting change talk. Asking open-ended questions is for the client to have a more thoughtful answer. This will allow Tom to explore aloud while receiving support. It’s important to give encouragement. Eliciting change talk does not have confrontation but does involve collaboration. This will help him feel like he is in a safe environment. He will talk control in what direction or change of the conversation. This will help Tom to be able to discover whether to change or not to change. Solution-focused therapy style I chose are language of hope and exceptions facilitate change. Language of hope is for counselors to pay carefully pay attention to what the client choice of words are, and counselors being selected of what words to use with the clients. Since Tom is dismissing his addiction behavior this is important because we do not know how he is feeling being in counseling. The choice of words by the counselor can have an effect on the client’s amenability to and engagement in counseling (Capuzzi and Stauffer, 2019). Exceptions facilitate change focuses on exceptions to the problem rather than the problem itself. Since Tom went out “occasionally” not all the time meaning. Asking him to talk about a time when he was not in a casino how did he feel or what was good about that day. This will change the client’s perspective to a nonproblem time in the past, and a time that was a positive emotion which did not include gambling. Reference: Capuzzi, D., & Stauffer, M. D. (2019).
