Discussion 8 8-1 Discussion: Definition of Addiction The definition that I gave for addiction at the beginning of the course is when an individual is not able to take control of what they think they need to be able to help them function daily . I would revisit and add to my definition because there is more to addiction. Substance addiction or process addictions is what an individual can be addicted to. Process addictions encompass behavior patterns such as gambling or sexual addictions (Capuzzi and Stauffer, 2019). Substance addictions is chemical dependence that is classified as something that ingested due to taking-in of mood- altering chemicals such as alcohol or other drugs. Addiction can cause a person to have psychological dependence, this is when a person believes they need a drug. Addiction can also cause physiological dependence this is when a person’s body becomes chemically dependent on the drug. I feel an important ethical area for a new or inexperienced addiction counselor would be under principle II: confidentiality and privileged Communication section under confidentiality. The addiction counselor needs to understand that confidentiality and anonymity are foundational to addiction treatment. They need to protect the identity and privacy of a client. I feel a challenging ethical area for a new or inexperienced addiction counselor would be under principle IV: working in a culturally diverse world is personal beliefs. Counselors need to recognize the personal and professional values that may be in alignment with or in conflict with the needs of the client. Reference: Capuzzi, D., & Stauffer, M. D. (2019).
