As a newcomer to the U.S. Kuai is unfamiliar with the language, culture, and school expectations. His situation is complicated by the fact that he is in a rural area with access to only
very limited ESL services complemented by the efforts of Mr. Levinson and Ms. Tobin, who are trying to help him but who are not knowledgeable in teaching an English language learner. Using the principals of UDL discussed in Chapter 1 and multicultural education, if Kuai was assigned to you as a teacher, how would you begin to teach him? What additional resources would you access? How could a special educator like Ms. Tobin be an asset in working with Kuai? What are possible drawbacks to a special educator working with a student such as Kuai?
Using the principals of UDL and multicultural education, if Kuai was assigned to me as a teacher
I would try to make him as comfortable in the classroom environment as possible. I would label thing to help him navigate the classroom easier and try to make things seem less intimidating. I would offer a few different approaches on how we present content/information to him and see what works best for him. We would also start slow and gradually work our way to more difficult task/concepts. I would also adjust how I would teach him. I would do this by trying to find something that Kuai relates to and is interested in, so that he will be interested in the information that I’m trying to relate to him. I will also track how Kuai responds to different teaching methods
and stay focused on what seems to be his strengths and needs (page 28). I would also do some research on Kuai’s culture so that I can reference it and appreciate where he came from. I would try to find some books or readings that include his language and culture then give him the chance
to inform me on it. I feel like doing this could be a way to build a bond with a student, because it would show him that I am interested in him as a person and not just a child at my job. I would try
to access additional resources that help Kuai relate information we are talking about back to his culture/language. Another thing I would want to do in this situation is try to be an anchor for Kuai’s family. If they were already confused by the American culture, that schooling and teachers could be a culture shock for them as well as their children. I feel like a special educator like Ms. Tobin would be an asset to a student like Kuai because she is dedicated to her work and her students. She is willing to step out of her comfort zone and try to assist Kuai. She is patient and she is personable with her students as she is given a chance to interact with them one on one.
I think a drawback to having a special educator working with a student like Kuai is that without being able to proficiently speak English, he will never fully profit instruction provided in English
(page 81).
