Assignment #1
1.
Apply TWO characteristics of culture to the clip you selected.
Be sure to describe where this characteristic is present in the clip and highlight the nonverbal
communication related to that characteristic in detail.
Select 2 characteristics from the following:
1. Individualism and Collectivism
2. Contact/Noncontact
3. Immediate/non-immediate
4. Power Distance
5. High and Low Context
6. Gender Orientation
The clip I chose is from a favorite movie of mine, The Devil wears Prada.
The two characteristics I thought best fit the description is non-contact and power distance characteristic. Non-contact describes cultures having little to no contact such as proximity, less eye contact and touch less. I’m not sure of their culture background but in this scene, you can see
how Meryl Streep, the boss is barely making any interaction and sizing her, Anne Hathaway up and down and continuing her business as if she is not phased with what Anne has to say (limited eye contact). Anne on the other hand seem nervous swallowing hard and fidgeting and all over the place when speaking but still giving enough personal space to Meryl as a sign of respect. Power distance refers to the degree of social inequality or hierarchy that exists within a given culture. Again, based off this clip, Meryl presence alone from the big desk, office view (skyscrapers), posture and attire nonverbally speak volumes of her hierarchy status indicating she
is the boss and the person running things even when Nigel (the guy) reported to her.
2.
Were any of the characters challenged by the nonverbal communication they
experienced with other characters in the scene you selected?
If yes, describe what challenge they experienced in this scene (see list below).
If no, why don’t you think they struggled with a sociocultural challenge of nonverbal
communication in this scene?
Challenges and Opportunities of Sociocultural Nonverbal Communication
Stereotypes and Overgeneralization
Emphasizing Difference over Similarities
Implicit Bias and Microaggressions
Viewing Cultural Norms as Static
Viewing Cultures Through an Ethnocentric Lens
3. You were able to select your favorite TV show or movie for this activity. You are also
learning about nonverbal communication in a class in the United States. With these two facts
in mind, it’s important to think about your own cultural lens.
Based on the clip you selected and analyzed, do you think that there were any points in
watching this clip or answering the reflection questions that you may have had an
ethnocentric lens? If so, when? If not, why not?
I would have to say the challenging factor in this scene was stereotype. He, Nigel disregarded Anne existence and continued with his needs speaking to Meryl and judged Anne by her appearance as well as referring to her as "that sad little person" with a perplexed look on his face.
Stereotypes are mental categories we base on groups from appearance, do they belong and overall judgmental characteristics. Normally its fitting for a group more so individual according to text.

I would say yes and no to me having ethnocentric lens. Upon watching the movie for the first time of course I compared their behavior towards my natural behavior and questioned why they act this way and what not. Why she not speaking up or why is she so intimidated and thought if I was her, I would do things so differently. Ethnocentric lens refers to judging another culture or co culture through the lens and evaluative frame of our own group. In conclusion, being biased to
a degree.
