Why are the elderly and disabled considered vulnerable populations, and what special considerations are needed when working with these groups? Vulnerability can come in many forms: adequate nutrition,
housing, health care, and physical and economic security or the death of a spouse. One specific consideration needed when working with this age group is directness, which means asking older people directly what they strive for or try to avoid. Additional considerations may include social networking with
family, friends, or community institutions like religious and voluntary associations. Identify key elements of coping with dying as described in our course materials. Do these concepts dovetail with Scripture? Why or why not? According to (Corr et al. p. 134), three focal domains stand out for coping with dying: appraisal-focused, problem-focused, and emotion-focused. The key concepts mentioned above do dovetail with Scripture for the reasoning that dying is the extreme inquest to our faith. Being a faithful Christian does not exclude us from dying unless we are living when Christ returns. We cannot escape or postpone it when it's time to go. As Christians, we need to view death realistically. The most apparent concept is emotion-focused, centered on the skill set of affective regulation for trying
to maintain hope and control emotions when dealing with a stressful situation. The Bible states, "For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord" (Holman Bible Publishers, Romans 8:38-39). What are the four dimensions of caring for the dying? Give an example of how these dimensions might emerge using a case example (media example or made-up). The four dimensions, according to (Corr et al.) are cognitive, affective, behavioral, and valuational. A case example of cognitive dimension is Ryan White, a 13-year-old boy from Indiana, diagnosed with AIDS after a blood transfusion in 1984. Doctors gave young Ryan approximately six months to live; when he returned to school, he faced AIDS-related discrimination in his community. Ryan did gain national attention and became the face of public education about the disease. Surprising his doctors, Ryan lived five years longer than expected. Ryan passed away in April 1990, one month before his high school graduation ("Who Was Ryan White? | Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program").
What are the advantages and limitations of being cared for by a long-term care facility, home healthcare program, hospice, versus a hospital as far as mental health support? One of the advantages of long-term care is the constant and comprehensive medical care; the most significant negative to long-term is it is simply "not home." One advantage of home care is that older people can stay home and remain somewhat independent. On the other hand, in-home caregivers change frequently, which can upset the client as change can be difficult. Hospice will provide the patient and personal caregivers round-the-clock
care, including weekends and holidays. One main disadvantage is once hospice is in place, hospitalization
is discouraged, and specific diagnostic testing can be denied, for example, blood testing or x-rays.
