Week 2 Discussion: Therapeutic Factors and Skills of Effective Group Leaders 0 Unread replies 0 Replies Please post something to the discussion board related to the content we are looking at this week. For each post, be succinct (use no more than 75 words) and professional. Here are some ideas to get you started: Describe some of your personal characteristics that will enable you to be an effective counselor. For example, you might discuss presence, genuineness, and an awareness of subtle cultural issues. Locate a video that demonstrates effective group leadership skills in action. Share the link. Identify and detail the specific skills that are demonstrated and how they can impact the group dynamic. Describe what ineffective group leadership may look like, sound like, and feel like. Specifically, share how might you feel as a group member if the group leader lacked effective skills. Share which of the readings this week offered information you can immediately use, and detail how you will use this information either personally or professionally. As a person who has conducted groups and a former leader in the military, I believe some of my personal characteristics such as openness, warmth, creativity and awareness will help me be an effective counselor. Being able to identify in the leadership style section helped. I fall under the democratic group leadership style. It is less directive than authoritarian style and serves as facilitators who share responsibility with the group (Gladding, 2019). I have observed and participated in groups where there was less interaction and emotional stimulation with facilitators and participants were less interested. Which can be an ineffective group. Participants are more likely to participate when the facilitators show that they care and know what they are talking about by emotionally stimulating the group. Reference Gladding, S. T. (2019).
