[Last Name] 1 Alejandra Copyak Stephen Reiher COMM 1010 09/04/2023 Short Paper 1: What Went Wrong? Yesterday afternoon, my sisters and I drove to my uncle's house in Salem, Utah to celebrate my cousin's birthday. To save gas and time, we decided to take one car and arrived at around 5:30 p.m. We stayed there until 9:10 p.m. Afterwards, we drove to Draper and stopped at a local McDonald's to grab a quick bite to eat. However, due to this, we got home around 11:00 pm, which upset my youngest sister as she wanted to go to her dad's house earlier. 1. Sender (Communicator A): Did the right person send the message? My youngest sister should have informed the driver that she had other plans for the evening and needed to be back home at a decent time, but she didn't. 2. Encoding : Did the sender use words or nonverbal cues that were confusing, inappropriate or irrelevant? During our visit to my uncle's house, I noticed that my youngest sister was behaving differently than the rest of us. She was disengaged from the conversations and family games that everyone else was participating in and seemed to be feeling annoyed. However, I didn't inquire about what was bothering her or why she didn't want to join in on the games.
[Last Name] 2 3. Message : Was the message too short or too long? Were there too many messages? Was the message poorly formulated? Was the timing wrong I think the message was poorly communicated as my sister lacked the necessary communication skills to convey her plans for the evening and when she needed to be home to my mom and the driver. As a result, we were not fully aware of what her plans were. Additionally, my youngest sister told me that she wanted to go to her dad's house as soon as we got home from McDonald's. 4. Channel : Was the most effective channel chosen? My youngest sister should have sent a message to my mom letting her know that she wanted to go to her dad's house, and she should have also texted and verbally let me know that she wanted to be home by a certain time. 5. Receiver (Communicator B): Was there a receiver? Was the message received by the wrong person? The message was received by my sister's father. She informed him that she would be coming over later in the day and would send a text to let him know when she was on her way. 6. Decoding : Did the receiver misunderstand the meaning of the message? Did they read in meanings that were unintended? In my opinion, it would have been better to have multiple receivers instead of just one. I think this would have been more effective and efficient in achieving the desired outcome.
