What informal forms of communication did you observe? Informal forms of communication were protests, graffiti signs, face to face conversations, and texting.
What should be added to strengthen communication within and across neighborhoods in Sentinel City®? Something that should be added for communication is a newsletter to help communicate within the community including text alerts to facilitate easier and faster spread of information.
What do signs, billboards, or posters tell about the life of residents in this community?
The neighborhood signage changed in what looked like relation to income. In the wealthy neighborhoods signs geared towards recycling, and sports and mental health resources. While
in the lower income community was focused more on addictions and physical health.
What is the relationship between communication and determinants of health? Effective communication and better health outcomes are very closely intertwined. Communication helps to promote healthy behaviors, and addressing any social or economic factors that may disrupt health outcomes. By tailoring messages to diverse populations, considering cultural contexts, and ensuring access to information, communication acts as a critical tool in bridging the gap between health determinants and positive health outcomes at both individual and community levels.
Case Scenario There has been a recent multi-neighborhood foodborne outbreak involving E. coli (Escherichia coli) in Sentinel City®. Sixty elementary school-age children were out sick this week. Several adults and children from all four neighborhoods have been evaluated in local clinics and the emergency room with complaints of abdominal pain, sudden severe diarrhea, nausea, and fatigue.
What form of formal mass communication would be most effective for educating the public about the causes, symptoms, and prevention of E. coli in the city?
The most effective way to mass communicate the infection would be an article on the main news cite for the city providing a link to the health department information along with information on how to prevent infection, what to do if infected and stop the spread. Online information is more accessible to many in the community and spreads quicker than physical news articles. The information being on the official city website also dispels some of the distrust that the community may have in the information (
