What is your reaction to the Highly Useless, Educated People article? Agree?
Disagree? (maybe a little of both?) Can you relate? Why/Why not? 1 paragraph (1 pt)
My reaction to the Highly Useless, Educated People article is that I can definitely see where they are coming from with a lot of their ideas, however, I don't think that it is completely practical to implement in every student's life everywhere. I do agree that there are certain areas of teaching and subjects that this method would be preferred, but I also think that there are certain areas that this would not be preferred. I think that if
educators skillfully mentor and inspire the students to become individual leaders with their own teachings and learnings that the article’s ideologies would be successful. But, there are many students and educator relationships where they would not be able to do this. Whether they have a bad relationship, one or both are stubborn with the learnings, or they don’t have everything needed to make it work. A lot of these standards include money amongst other things and this is not something that every student and educator has access to. 2.
The article claims that too many K-12 students are “school smart” instead of “street smart.” Do you think the (ISTE) Student
standards can help
reverse this so students can become “independent thinkers and doers?” Explain why or why not, addressing
at least two
of the seven
student standards. You need to include the name
of each standard that you address. 2-3 paragraphs

I think that the ISTE student standards could help students become better independent thinkers and doers, however, I don’t think that these standards directly correlate with these students becoming “street smart”. I think that the first student standard which is the Empowered Learner states that students leverage technology to take an active role in choosing, achieving, and demonstrating competency in their learning goals, informed by the learning sciences. I think that this is a critical standard for teaching students to be an independent learner using the technology that we have today. Having students create their own personal goals to follow helps them reach newer and better levels in education. Students that can understand all the uses of technology can grow their education to new levels and that is what this standard explains. However the negative to their standard is that not every student has access to unlimited technology or even technology at all which creates difficulties with this standard.
Another ISTE standard that I think is important for students becoming independent thinkers and doers is the Global Collaborator standard which has students use digital tools to broaden their perspectives and enrich their learning by collaborating with others and working effectively in teams locally and globally. This is in my opinion one of the most important standards because it teaches students to have cultural awareness. As someone who has lived in different countries and traveled to many different cultures, I think it is so important for people to learn about different cultures
because it grows their own awareness and intelligence about the world. I think that the idea of having students exploring local and global issues and using collaborative technologies to work with others to investigate solutions is something that could completely change the way the younger generations learn.
